Chapter 5 - THE COUNTDOWN TO REDEMPTION

"NO! MY GOD, NO!" I screamed, diving into the back of the armored van.
Misha was crying hysterically, his small body trembling as the leather straps of the explosive vest bound him tightly to the vehicle's metal frame. The digital timer flickered coldly in the darkness: 00:51... 00:50...
"Elena! Help me! Please, Elena!" Misha sobbed, reaching his tiny hands toward me.
"I'm here, baby, I'm here!" I yelled, my fingers frantically clawing at the heavy steel lock holding the straps together. It was solid iron, completely immovable without a key.
Outside, the air exploded with gunshots. Mikhail was fighting off Viktor’s remaining men single-handedly, holding the perimeter to buy me time.
"MIKHAIL!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, leaning out of the van. "IT'S A BOMB! MISHA HAS A BOMB ON HIM!"
Mikhail’s head snapped toward us. His face paled to a ghostly white, horror washing over his sharp features. He gunned down the last attacker in front of him and sprinted toward the van, sliding onto the steel floor beside me.
"Misha!" Mikhail gasped, his voice cracking as he saw the vest. 00:38... 00:37...
"Papa! I'm scared!" Misha cried out.
"Listen to me, son! Look at me, don't look at the clock!" Mikhail commanded, his hands moving with incredible speed as he examined the explosive device wired around his son's chest. "Viktor used a C4 military charge with a dual-wire trigger system..."
Mikhail pulled a tactical knife from his boot, jamming it into the casing to pop open the wiring panel. Inside were dozens of tangled, colorful wires—red, blue, yellow, and green.
00:25... 00:24...
"Which one is it?!" I shouted, holding a flashlight steady despite my arms shaking violently. "Mikhail, which wire do you cut?!"
"I don't know!" Mikhail yelled back, perspiration pouring down his face, mixing with the blood on his forehead. "Viktor designed this himself! He was the demolitions expert in our family!"
00:18... 00:17...
Suddenly, a cold, taunting laugh echoed from a loudspeaker near the garage. Viktor stood on the second-floor balcony above us, holding a sniper rifle and a remote communicator.
"Enjoying my little gift, brother?" Viktor’s voice blasted through the storm. "You have fifteen seconds! Cut the red wire, and it detonates instantly! Cut the blue wire, and the timer cuts in half! You can't save him, Mikhail! You lose EVERYTHING!"
00:12... 00:11...
Mikhail’s hands froze. The mighty mob boss, the man who controlled an entire city, was completely paralyzed by fear. Drops of his tears fell onto the glowing red digital clock.
"I can't..." Mikhail whispered, his voice trembling with agonizing defeat. "If I pick wrong, I kill my own son..."
"Look at me, Mikhail!" I grabbed his face, forcing him to meet my eyes. "You trust me or you don't! But we are NOT letting him die!"
I looked down at the exposed circuit board. I didn't know anything about bombs, but my father had been an expert in encrypted systems. He used to leave puzzle codes for me on the kitchen table when I was a little girl—codes based on simple mathematical color patterns.
Red was always a trap. Blue was a decoy.
"The yellow wire," I blurted out, intuition screaming through every fiber of my being. "Cut the yellow wire!"
"Elena, if you're wrong—"
"TRUST ME!" I roared.
00:05... 00:04...
Mikhail closed his eyes, let out a gut-wrenching scream, and sliced the tactical knife through the thick yellow wire!
CLICK.
The digital display instantly went black. The loud ticking stopped. The timer froze at 00:02.
Silence fell over the van. Misha let out a tiny breath and slumped forward into my lap. I wrapped my arms around him, weeping uncontrollably, kissing his hair over and over again. We had made it.
Mikhail stared at the dead timer in absolute disbelief, then looked up at me. The icy barrier in his eyes was completely gone, replaced by a look of sheer, profound reverence and gratitude.
"You saved him," Mikhail whispered softly. "Again."
"INCOMPETENT FOOLS!" Viktor’s enraged voice roared from the balcony.
Before Viktor could raise his sniper rifle to shoot us, Mikhail reacted with lightning speed. He grabbed his assault rifle, stood up in the open van door, and emptied an entire thirty-round magazine directly into the balcony above!
Concrete exploded. Viktor screamed as multiple bullets tore through his chest, sending his body crashing over the railing and plunging twenty feet down onto the stone driveway with a sickening thud.
Mikhail stepped out of the van, walking slowly toward his dying brother.
Viktor lay in a pool of his own blood, coughing violently. "You... you think you won, Mikhail?" Viktor rasped, a bloody smile on his lips. "The Raven Syndicate... they already know about Elena... The Grand Master is coming to Chicago himself... He's going to tear your world apart..."
Viktor’s eyes rolled back, and he drew his final breath.
Mikhail stood over his brother's corpse for a long moment before turning back to us. He walked to the van, unbuckled the bomb vest from Misha, and pulled both of us into a powerful, crushing embrace.
"I'm sorry, Elena," Mikhail whispered into my neck, his deep voice trembling with emotion. "I should have never doubted you. I promise you, on my life, I will protect you from what's coming."
"What is coming, Mikhail?" I asked, looking up into his dark eyes.
May you like
"A war," he answered grimly. "The ultimate war for Chicago."
CHAPTER 5 HOOK: Three days later, Mikhail surrendered all his territory to the Ravens to broker a peace treaty for my freedom. But as we arrived at the neutral meeting location, the Grand Master stepped out of his limousine—and I froze when I saw his face. He wasn't a stranger... He was the regular old customer who had sat in my diner every single morning for five years!
