Chapter 1

Gabriel Mendoza's phone vibrated on the conference room table at 1:17 p.m., just as his manager was explaining the latest budget cuts and everyone pretended that a spreadsheet mattered more than anything happening outside that office on Reforma Avenue.

He ignored the first call.

The second came just three seconds later.

A cold weight settled behind Gabriel's ribs. Mateo was only four years old, and he knew the rule: never call Dad while he's at work unless something was seriously wrong.

"What's wrong, buddy?" Gabriel answered, jumping to his feet.

There were no words on the other end—only broken, shallow breathing, as if the little boy was trying to cry without making a sound.

"Dad... come get me."

Gabriel's chair scraped loudly across the floor.

The entire meeting room fell silent.

"Mateo, where's your mom?"

"She's not here... she went to the store."

"Who's with you?"

The little boy swallowed hard.

"Iván... Mom's boyfriend. He hit me with the baseball bat. My arm really hurts. He said if I cried, he'd hit me again."

Gabriel understood every word separately.

But his mind refused to put them together.

Bat. Arm. Again. His son.

Then a man's voice exploded in the background.

"Who are you talking to? Give me that phone!"

Mateo screamed.

The call ended.

Gabriel ran.

He left his laptop open, his coffee untouched, and his suit jacket hanging beside the elevator. He was more than twenty minutes away from Lorena's house—his ex-wife's home in Lindavista. At that hour, with traffic, construction, and delivery trucks blocking the streets, it could easily take thirty-five.

His first call was to his older brother, Raúl.

Raúl had spent years fighting in regional mixed martial arts competitions before a shoulder injury forced him to retire. But what truly intimidated people wasn't his strength.

It was the calm that settled over him whenever someone crossed a line.

"Mateo called me," Gabriel said as he sprinted toward the parking garage. "Iván hit him with a baseball bat. Lorena isn't home. Where are you?"

There was one second of silence.

"I'm twelve minutes away."

"Go. I'll call 911."

"I'm on my way."

At 1:20 p.m., Gabriel drove with one hand while giving the emergency dispatcher the details with the other: his son's full name, his age, the address, an abusive adult, a baseball bat, and a direct threat.

"Do not enter the residence if the suspect is still armed," the dispatcher warned.

Gabriel tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

There wasn't a version of himself that could stand outside waiting while his son begged for help.

At 1:28 p.m., Raúl called.

"I'm here. The front door is half open. Mateo's blue sneaker is lying on the sidewalk."

Gabriel stopped breathing.

"Wait for the police."

"I can hear yelling."

Through the phone, Gabriel heard Iván shout:

"I told you to shut up!"

Then Mateo screamed.

Raúl climbed the front steps.

"Don't do anything reckless," Gabriel pleaded.

"I'm not here to fight," Raúl replied in a voice so cold it sent chills down Gabriel's spine. "I'm here to get my nephew out."

He stepped inside.

"Mateo, listen to my voice. Come toward me."

"Uncle Raúl?" the little boy sobbed.

Something heavy scraped across the floor.

"Put the bat down, Iván."

"Get out of my house!"

"It's not your house."

At that exact moment, Lorena pulled into the driveway carrying grocery bags.

She dropped everything the instant she saw the front door standing open... and her son's blue sneaker lying outside.

"Where's Mateo?"

Without taking his eyes off the man, Raúl answered,

"He's behind the table. Iván still has the bat."

Lorena turned pale.

"Iván... put it down."

"The brat was throwing a tantrum," Iván snapped. "Somebody had to teach him a lesson."

Then Mateo spoke a single sentence that shattered everything that was still holding together.
