Chapter 6 - THE WEB OF DECEIT

Gabriel froze.

The sound of slow, deliberate footsteps echoed from the darkness directly behind him. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. He didn't turn around, but he felt the cold, hard metallic barrel of a small-caliber pistol press firmly against the base of his skull.

"Drop the iron bar, Gabriel," a familiar voice whispered.

Gabriel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. His hands shook as he let the iron crowbar fall to the concrete floor with a heavy, hollow clang.

He slowly turned his head. Standing behind him, holding a silenced pistol with a calm, practiced grip, was Detective Vargas.

"Vargas...?" Gabriel breathed, his mind completely fracturing under the weight of the betrayal. "You're... you're with them?"

"Let’s be precise, Mr. Mendoza," Vargas said, stepping forward into the light, gesturing for Gabriel to walk toward the center of the room with his hands up. "Hector works for me. Not the other way around. Do you really think a mid-level logistics thug could coordinate an insurance fraud ring across three different private medical clinics without a badge to clear the red tape?"

Lorena let out a muffled sob from her chair. "Gabriel... I tried to tell you... the whole precinct is dirty..."

"Not the whole precinct, Lorena. Just the ones who matter," Vargas chuckled, walking over to Hector and patting him on the shoulder. "You see, Gabriel, the plan was actually perfect. Iván was supposed to ensure the boy had a tragic, fatal 'fall' down the stairs next month. The payout would cover Hector’s debts to my associates, and I would get my forty percent cut for suppressing the case file."

Vargas shook his head, looking genuinely annoyed. "But Iván is an idiot. He got impatient. He hit the boy with a bat while you were on the phone. He ruined the entire sequence of events."

Gabriel felt an overwhelming, blinding wave of fury wash over him. "You used my son. You used a four-year-old child as a lottery ticket."

"It's just business, Gabriel," Vargas said, raising his weapon, aligning the sights directly between Gabriel’s eyes. "But look on the bright side. Now, the narrative is even simpler. An enraged, grieving ex-husband tracks his ex-wife to an abandoned warehouse. A tragic shootout occurs between a jealous ex and her criminal associates. I arrive too late to save anyone, but just in time to heroically take down Hector and his henchman. I clean up my loose ends, and I look like a saint."

Hector frowned, turning toward Vargas. "Wait... what did you say about taking me down—"

Pop. Pop.

Two muffled gunshots cracked through the warehouse.

Hector collapsed to the floor instantly, clutching his chest, his eyes wide with shock as life drained from his body. The other henchman didn't even have time to raise his weapon before Vargas spun and fired a third round, dropping him instantly into the dust.

The silence that followed was terrifying. Only the sound of Lorena’s frantic, muffled breathing filled the vast space.

Vargas turned the gun back to Gabriel, a chilling smile on his face. "See? Perfect narrative. You killed them, Gabriel. And now, unfortunately, I have to kill you in self-defense."

Gabriel closed his eyes, preparing for the end, praying that Raúl would keep Mateo safe.

"Hey, Vargas," a thunderous voice boomed from the rafters above.

Vargas blinked, looking up into the darkness.

A heavy wooden pallet, suspended by an old chain hoist overhead, came crashing down like a guillotine.

HOOK TO NEXT CHAPTER: The pallet smashes directly into Vargas’s arm, sending his gun flying into the darkness. Out of the shadows steps Raúl, his face covered in grease and sweat, holding a heavy steel pipe. But as Vargas scrambles away toward the fallen weapon, the sound of multiple police sirens echoes from outside—not Vargas's dirty cops, but federal vehicles. And the final, shocking truth about who actually blew the whistle is about to be revealed.
