Chapter 3 - THE COLD HARD TRUTH

The flashing red and blue lights of three police cruisers washed over the walls of the Lindavista home, turning the living room into a surreal, pulsing nightmare.

Two officers burst through the door with weapons drawn, commanding everyone to freeze. Raúl immediately put his hands up, stepping away from an incapacitated, bleeding Iván. Gabriel, completely ignoring the chaos around him, dropped to his knees beside his brother, gently taking Mateo into his arms, mindful of the boy's severe injury.

"Daddy... you came," Mateo whispered, his face streaked with tears and dirt.

"I'm here, buddy. I've got you. You're safe," Gabriel choked out, pressing his forehead against his son's. He looked up at the paramedic who had just entered the room. "Please, take him. His arm... I think it's broken."

As the paramedics rushed Mateo to the ambulance, the police began cuffing a swearing, delirious Iván. But the real drama was unfolding in the corner of the room, where an officer was trying to take the heavy metal lockbox from Lorena’s hands.

"Ma'am, we need you to step outside and release the personal property for evidence gathering," the officer stated firmly.

"No! This has nothing to do with what happened!" Lorena yelled, her voice high and panicked. "This is mine! Gabriel, tell them! Tell them it's my personal paperwork!"

Gabriel stood up slowly, the raw paternal instinct in him giving way to a freezing, analytical rage. He walked over to his ex-wife. He looked at the lockbox. It was an old fireproof safe they used to share when they were married, but the code had clearly been changed.

"What's in the box, Lorena?" Gabriel asked, his voice deadly quiet.

"Nothing, Gabriel! It's just my jewelry and legal documents!"

Raúl walked up behind his brother, wiping a smear of Iván's blood from his knuckles. "If it's just jewelry, why did you drop your bleeding son to go dig it out of a closet before the cops got here?"

"Sir, step back," the officer ordered Raúl, but Gabriel stepped in between.

"Officer, that box belongs to a residence where a child was just severely assaulted," Gabriel said, maintaining an eerie level of calm. "I am the boy's father and co-owner of this property on the deed. I want that box inspected."

Seeing the mounting tension and the potential tampering with a crime scene, the police sergeant intervened, forcefully but carefully taking the lockbox from Lorena’s grip. She let out a sharp, desperate cry, reaching for it as if her very life depended on its contents.

An hour later, at the hospital, the doctor confirmed Gabriel’s worst fears: Mateo’s left ulna was completely fractured. He had deep contusions across his back and defensive bruising on his palms. He had tried to protect himself.

Gabriel sat by the hospital bed, holding his sleeping son’s uninjured hand. The door opened softly, and Raúl walked in, followed by a detective named Vargas.

"Mr. Mendoza?" Detective Vargas said, adjusting his notebook. "We've processed the scene, and we've managed to open the lockbox your ex-wife was carrying."

Gabriel didn't look up from Mateo. "What was in it?"

"It wasn't jewelry, Mr. Mendoza," Detective Vargas said gravely. "It was a stack of medical evaluations from three different clinics across the city, dating back over the last six months. All of them under false names, but matching your son's age and description. Bruises, sprains, a hairline fracture in his ankle from three months ago."

Gabriel felt the room spin. "She was hiding the evidence... she was taking him to different doctors so the system wouldn't flag a pattern of abuse."

"It gets worse," Vargas continued, looking at his notes with a grimace. "We also found a signed life insurance policy on Mateo. Taken out four months ago by your ex-wife. The beneficiary is Lorena Mendoza. The payout is five million pesos in the event of accidental death."

Gabriel’s breath hitched in his throat. It wasn't just a case of an abusive boyfriend and a mother turning a blind eye out of fear or codependency.

HOOK TO NEXT CHAPTER: Gabriel slowly stands up, the realization washing over him like ice water. He looks at Detective Vargas and asks, "Where is Lorena right now?" The detective's response sends a jolt of pure panic through the room: "She was released on a signature bond an hour ago. And she just left the station with Iván's brother."
