Chapter 1 - THE SILENCE BEFORE THE STORMPreston Cole’s professional composure dissolved in less than three seconds.

His fingers, which had been neatly arranged over his leather folder, twitched. He blinked twice, his eyes darting toward Vanessa for backup. But Vanessa’s confident, condescending smile had already vanished, replaced by a sudden, rigid tension in her jaw.

"Colonel Parker," Preston began, his voice dropping an octave into formal intimidation mode, "this is a procedural inquiry. Under the context of marital equity and domestic asset preservation—"

"I asked you a very simple question, Mr. Cole," I interrupted, my tone level and devoid of any warmth. "My father is a citizen of sound mind. He is sixty-nine years old, fully capable of managing his own affairs, and he has not appointed a legal guardian. Where is his signature on this mandate?"

Preston cleared his throat, adjusting his tie. "Mr. Parker is unaware of these preliminary filings because we wished to spare him unnecessary stress until the facts—"

"So you are here representing Vanessa, not my father," I stated, leaning back into my worn armchair. "Let’s be entirely clear about who is paying your retainer before we discuss my grandfather's estate."

Vanessa stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against my linoleum floor. "Don't play games with us, Christine. Everyone in the family knows your grandfather was a wealthy man. When he died, that money should have gone to your father, not bypassed him straight to a junior military officer who thinks she can hide behind uniform regulations!"

I didn't blink. I let the silence stretch, watching the way her chest rose and fell beneath her cream-colored blazer. She wanted a fight. She wanted me to lose my temper so she could paint me as unhinged, unstable, and unfit.

Instead, I stood up slowly.

"You walked into my home uninvited, carrying documents based on neighborhood gossip and tavern whispers from retired card players," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a cold blade. "You have no legal standing, no power of attorney, and no jurisdiction here. You have two minutes to walk out that front door before I call the base military police and have you both escorted off federal property."

Preston looked at Vanessa, silently calculating the legal exposure. He closed his folder with a sharp snap.

"This is not over, Colonel," he muttered, standing up. "We will be filing a formal motion to compel financial disclosure through the civil courts."

"File whatever you like, Mr. Cole," I replied, holding the front door wide open for them. "Just make sure your malpractice insurance is paid up first."
