Chapter 7 - THE SHOWDOWN IN THE DRIVEWAYVanessa slammed her car door shut and marched down the driveway, her face contorted with cold fury.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" she shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at my face. "Get him out of that car right now! You have no legal right to remove him from his marital home!"
I stepped out of the Ford Explorer, leaving the engine running, and walked around to stand squarely in her path.
"He is my father," I said, my voice cutting through the night air. "And he is leaving this house voluntarily."
Vanessa laughed hysterically, her eyes flashing with venom. "Voluntarily? You brainwashed him! You and your stupid little military games! You think you can just swoop in and take him away because you’re hiding forty million dollars in a secret trust?"
Inside the car, my father rolled down his window. His voice, though weak, carried a quiet, terrifying finality that I had never heard from him before.
"Vanessa," he said.
She stopped shouting and turned toward him, her expression shifting instantly into fake sweetness. "Richard, honey, get out of the car. Your daughter is delusional—"
"I signed the separation papers this afternoon, Vanessa," my father interrupted quietly.
Vanessa froze. Her mouth opened, but no words came out.
"While you were out meeting with Mr. Cole," my father continued, his eyes locked on hers with absolute clarity, "Dot brought over a lawyer friend of mine from the rotary club. I read every single document you tried to force me to sign over the last six months. I know about the accounts. I know about your previous marriages. And I know about the lawsuit you filed against my daughter behind my back."
"Richard, that’s a lie! That lawyer tricked you—"
"The only person who tricked anyone is you," my father said, leaning back into his seat. "The locks on this house are being changed tomorrow morning. Don't bother coming back."

Vanessa turned back to me, her face pale with absolute rage. "You ruined this! You ruined everything!"
I smiled, stepping back toward my car door. "I told you on your wedding day, Vanessa. My father has never asked me for anything. But I’ll go to the ends of the earth to protect him from parasites like you."
