CHAPTER 4 — Their Father's Final Decision Was More Painful Than Any Prison Sentence

The prosecutor pressed play.
The courtroom speakers filled with familiar voices.
Michael's voice came first.
"He can't even move anymore."
Then Elena answered quietly.
"Ten million dollars changes everything."
Another recording followed.
"We'll take him to the cliffs."
"The brakes won't matter."
"Everyone will believe it was an accident."
One by one, every recording exposed months of planning.
There was no panic.
No hesitation.
Only cold calculations.
When the final recording ended, the courtroom remained completely silent.
Even the defense attorney lowered his head.
The evidence was overwhelming.
The judge turned toward Viktor.
"Mr. Viktor... before sentencing, would you like to address the court?"
The old man slowly nodded.
He looked at his children for a long time before speaking.
"I spent my whole life believing I was building wealth for my family."
"I worked eighteen hours a day."
"I missed birthdays."
"I missed vacations."
"I told myself one day my children would understand why I sacrificed so much."
His voice began to tremble.
"But standing here today..."
"I finally understand my greatest failure."
"It wasn't raising a successful company."
"It was failing to raise compassionate children."
Michael broke down completely.
"I'm sorry, Dad..."
"I was desperate."
Elena sobbed uncontrollably.
"We never wanted it to go this far."
Viktor quietly shook his head.
"You planned my death for months."
"You looked into my eyes..."
"...while deciding how much my life was worth."
Not a single person in the courtroom could hold back tears.
Then Viktor revealed one final secret.
"The insurance policy..."
"It was never worth ten million dollars."
Everyone looked confused.
The prosecutor frowned.
Viktor smiled sadly.
"I reduced the coverage to one hundred thousand dollars almost a year before the incident."
"I discovered someone had been searching through my documents."
"I wanted to know who."
The courtroom exploded with whispers.
Michael stared at his father in horror.
"What...?"
"The papers you found were old copies," Viktor continued.
"I left them where you could find them."
"It was a test."
His eyes filled with tears.
"I prayed every day that my children would choose me..."
"...instead of money."
"They failed."
The judge delivered the sentence.
Both Michael and Elena were found guilty of attempted murder, insurance fraud, and conspiracy.
Each received decades in prison.
As deputies led them away in handcuffs, both cried out for forgiveness.
Viktor closed his eyes.
He did not look back.
Months later, he quietly established a charitable foundation using the remainder of his fortune.
Instead of leaving his wealth to the children who had tried to kill him, he donated it to help stroke survivors, disabled veterans, and families struggling with long-term medical care.
On the entrance wall of the foundation hung a single bronze plaque:
"True wealth is measured not by what you leave your children... but by the values you leave in their hearts."
May you like
And every visitor who read those words understood that the greatest tragedy in Viktor's life had never been the stroke...
It had been the greed that stole his children long before they ever pushed him off the cliff.
