Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW MASTERThree days after Jack’s arrest, the media storm erupted.

Front-page headlines splashed across every newspaper and digital news portal:

FAMOUS VASCULAR SURGEON ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR FRAUD SYNDICATE.

HERO DOCTOR OR MEDICAL MONSTER? DR. JACK WALKER FACES 30 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON.

I sat in the high-rise office of Vance & Sterling, overlooking the city skyline. The heavy glass desk was covered in legal documents, corporate filings, and private investigator reports.

Gerald, my long-time senior partner and loyal friend, walked into the office carrying two hot coffees. He set one down in front of me and leaned against the desk, his graying eyebrows knit with concern.

"Jack was denied bail this morning," Gerald reported. "The judge ruled him a flight risk, especially after we proved he had purchased one-way tickets to the Maldives under an alias."

"Good," I said, taking a sip of coffee. "And Chloe?"

"Chloe Vance—no relation to you, ironical enough—has vanished. The moment Jack was cuffed, she emptied her apartment and went into hiding. But our investigators tracked her. She isn't just his mistress, Megan."

I looked up, sharp and focused. "What do you mean?"

Gerald pulled a black glossy photograph from a folder and slid it across the desk. It showed Chloe meeting a tall, silver-haired man in a dark suit at an upscale steakhouse downtown.

"Her real name is Chloe Mercer," Gerald explained. "She’s an operative working for Victor Vance."

My heart gave a sudden, violent thud.

Victor Vance.

My uncle. The black sheep of my family, whom my father had ousted from Vance Enterprises fifteen years ago for corporate espionage and extortion.

"Victor..." I murmured, the pieces suddenly falling into place with terrifying precision. "Jack wasn't smart enough to set up those offshore accounts on his own. He didn't have the legal knowledge to bypass hospital compliance protocols."

"Exactly," Gerald agreed grimly. "Victor set the whole thing up. He used Jack’s greed and vanity against him. Victor targeted Jack five years ago, brought Chloe into the picture to manipulate him, and used Jack’s medical practice to launder illegal money for Victor’s overseas gambling syndicates."

I leaned back in my chair, my hands tightening into fists.

Jack hadn't just been cheating on me. He had unwittingly partnered with my family’s worst enemy—the man who had ruined my father’s health and forced me into early retirement years ago. Victor knew that by destroying Jack, he could drag my name back into the dirt and reclaim control of the Vance Family Trust.

"Does Jack know who Victor really is?" I asked.

"No," Gerald shook his head. "Jack thinks Victor is just a wealthy foreign investor named 'Mr. Sterling.' Jack was a pawn, Megan. A useful idiot."

Suddenly, my phone on the desk buzzed. It was an unlisted, encrypted number.

I pressed speaker. "Megan Vance."

A smooth, raspy voice chuckled over the speaker—a voice I hadn't heard in over a decade.

"Hello, my dear niece," Victor Vance said, his tone dripping with fake warmth. "I must admit, I am impressed. I knew you were sharp, but I didn't expect you to burn your own marriage to the ground in a single afternoon."

"Victor," I said, my voice ice cold. "You’re playing a dangerous game."

"Am I?" Victor laughed softly. "You may have put your pathetic husband behind bars, Megan, but you played right into my hands. With Jack in prison, his medical practice goes into receivership. And guess who owns fifty-one percent of the debt notes on that practice?"

I froze.

"That's right," Victor continued, his voice darkening. "I do. Which means I now have legal access to all of your father's old private research patents that Jack was holding in his clinic’s vaults. The patents worth three hundred million dollars."

"You won't get away with this," I said.

"I already have, Megan. Unless... you want to make a deal. Meet me tonight at the waterfront docks. Come alone. Bring the master encryption key to the patents. If you don't..."

Victor paused, letting a chilling silence stretch over the phone line.

"If I don't, what?" I demanded.

May you like

"If you don't," Victor whispered, "your precious children, Leo and Maya, won't make it to their grandmother's house tonight."

The room seemed to spin. The line went dead.
