Chapter 6 - THE RECKONING OF THE WALKERSWith Victor Vance behind bars and his criminal network dismantled, the avalanche of consequences fell squarely on the remaining members of the Walker family.

Two weeks later, I sat in the grand courtroom of the Municipal Bankruptcy Court.
Carol and Ashley sat on the defendant's bench, flanked by a public defender who looked like he desperately wanted to be anywhere else in the world. They no longer wore designer clothes or gold jewelry. Carol was dressed in a faded cardigan, her hair unkempt, while Ashley looked thin, exhausted, and broken.
Across from them, I sat at the prosecutor's table with Gerald, dressed in a tailored navy suit, looking every bit the high-powered attorney I had spent a decade hiding.
"In light of the evidence presented," the judge announced, slamming his gavel onto the wooden block, "the court finds that the properties located at 442 Elm Street and 120 Ocean Drive were acquired using fraudulently diverted funds from the Vance Trust. The court orders the immediate liquidation of all real estate, luxury vehicles, and personal holdings belonging to Carol Walker and Ashley Walker to satisfy outstanding debts."
"Your Honor, please!" Carol shrieked, jumping to her feet. "I'm an old woman! I have nowhere to go! My son promised me that condo!"
"Your son promised you a life paid for with stolen money, Mrs. Walker," the judge replied coldly. "You are granted forty-eight hours to vacate the premise. If you fail to do so, federal marshals will remove you."
"Megan!" Ashley cried out, running toward the wooden bar separating our tables, tears streaming down her face. "Megan, please! I'm sorry! I was wrong! I didn't know Jack was stealing from you! Please don't take my apartment! I'll do anything! I'll work for you! I'll apologize on live TV!"
I stood up, smoothing down my jacket, and looked Ashley dead in the eyes.
"Do you remember two years ago, Ashley?" I asked, my voice calm and icy. "When you lost your temper at Thanksgiving because I forgot to buy your favorite brand of wine? You called me a useless leech in front of my children. You told me I was lucky Jack didn't throw me out on the street."
Ashley winced, her face flushing with shame. "I... I was just joking..."
"I wasn't," I replied. "You treated my kindness as stupidity. Now, you can learn what it feels like to earn your own living."
I turned my back on them and walked out of the courtroom, ignoring Carol’s hysterical screams echoing behind me.
Outside the courthouse, a swarm of news reporters rushed toward me, cameras flashing, microphones thrusting into my face.
"Ms. Vance! How does it feel to win your court case?"
"Is it true Dr. Jack Walker is facing life in prison?"
"What is your message to women who find themselves in similar situations?"
I stopped on the courthouse steps, looking straight into the main news camera.
"My message is simple," I said, my voice clear and powerful, broadcasting to millions of homes across the country. "Never confuse a woman’s silence for weakness. Never assume that because she loves you, she isn't watching. And most importantly... never steal from the person who built your foundation."
The reporters gasped and scribbled frantically in their notebooks as I stepped into my waiting black limousine.

As the car pulled away, Gerald handed me a glass of champagne. "A masterclass, Megan. Absolutely flawless."
"Not yet, Gerald," I said, looking out the tinted window. "I have one final visit to make."
