Chapter 5 - THE EMBERS OF MANHATTAN

Hook: The hunted lovers face their final night. They drove for hours, switching vehicles twice at abandoned Esposito warehouses to shake any trackers. By nightfall, they had reached a secluded safehouse hidden deep in the woods of upstate New York—a heavily fortified cabin overlooking a frozen lake.

Inside, the cabin was cold and dark. Dorian immediately went to work closing the heavy steel shutters, while Henry and Deb sat on the floor, still in shock from witnessing a mafia shootout.

“We’re dead, aren't we?” Henry whispered, staring at his hands. “We objected to a mafia wedding. We’re on a hit list.”

“No one knows you were involved,” Dorian said coldly, checking the magazine of his pistol. “They only know Angel. And they won't get to her. I’ve called in my most loyal captains. We are locked down.”

Angel walked over to Dorian, her green dress torn at the hem and stained with soot from the church. “Dorian, your father... your family... what happens now?”

Dorian stopped what he was doing and looked at her. The anger was gone, replaced by a deep, heavy exhaustion. “Silvio Maro will launch a full assault on our territories by midnight. My father will likely disown me. I threw away an empire today, Angel. For you.”

Angel reached out, her fingers trembling as she touched his cheek. “Do you regret it?”

Dorian closed his eyes, leaning into her touch. “I’ve spent my whole life being a monster for the sake of a legacy I never asked for. Today, when you stood there in that dress, I realized I’d rather die fighting by your side than live a lie with them.”

He pulled her into a fierce, protective embrace, burying his face in her hair.

Suddenly, the power in the cabin cut out.

The lights blinked and died, plunging the room into pitch blackness.

“They’re here,” Dorian whispered, his voice instantly turning back into that of a cold killer. He shoved Angel behind him. “Henry, Deb, get into the basement hidden under the kitchen rug. Now!”

Before they could move, the front door of the cabin shattered inward with an explosive blast.

Flashbang grenades went off, blinding them with white light and deafening noise. Angel screamed as she was thrown to the floor. Through the ringing in her ears, she heard the rapid fire of automatic weapons. Dorian was firing back, his muzzle flashes illuminating the room in strobes of light.

“Move, move, move!” raw voices shouted.

Angel tried to crawl toward Dorian, but a heavy boot slammed into her ribs, pinning her to the floor. A rough hand grabbed her hair, pulling her up.

Through the clearing smoke, she saw Silvio Maro standing in the doorway, surrounded by twenty heavily armed men. And standing right next to him, her white wedding dress covered in mud and blood, was Greta.

Dorian was on his knees, three lasers from sniper rifles trained directly on his chest. He was bleeding from a wound in his shoulder, his gun kicked far out of reach.

“End of the line, Esposito,” Silvio sneered.

Greta walked over to Angel, grabbing her by the chin and forcing her to look at Dorian. “Look at him, you little rat. You wanted him so badly? Watch him die in front of you.”

Silvio raised his gold-plated revolver, aiming it directly between Dorian’s eyes.

“Any last words, boy?” Silvio asked.

Dorian didn't look at Silvio. He looked at Angel, a tragic, beautiful smile on his lips. “I told you... you were mine.”
