Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF DOÑA VICTORIAHook Headline: SHE RULED THE FAMILY WITH AN IRON FIST FOR 30 YEARS—UNTIL THE POLICE BROKE DOWN HER FRONT DOOR!

At 2:00 AM, the massive mahogany front doors of the Vance Mansion were thrown open with a violent crash.

Doña Victoria was sitting in her velvet armchair in the grand parlor, sipping brandy, awaiting Ricardo’s triumphant phone call. Instead, she looked up to see her youngest son being dragged into the room by his collar, his nose broken, his face smeared with blood and rainwater, sobbing like a child.

Behind him stood Elena and me.

“What is the meaning of this insolence?!” Victoria spat, standing up, her hand trembling as she set down her crystal glass. “Alejandro, unhand your brother this instant! Have you lost your mind?!”

“No, Mother,” I said quietly, releasing Ricardo so he crumpled to the Persian rug at her feet. “I finally found it.”

“He knows, Mother!” Ricardo wailed from the floor. “He knows about the port! He knows about the shell companies! The Russians abandoned us! The feds are coming!”

Victoria’s face transformed instantly from aristocratic disdain to cold, calculated venom. She didn't look at her broken son; she directed all her hatred toward Elena.

“You trash,” Victoria hissed, stepping toward Elena. “You ruined this family! From the day Alejandro brought you into this house, you were a disease! I built this family’s reputation! I was not going to let my son throw his wealth away on a pathetic orphan!”

Elena didn't shrink back this time. She took a firm step forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me, staring her abuser straight in the eyes.

“You didn't build anything, Victoria,” Elena said, her voice clear and ringing with absolute authority. “You’re a parasite living off the labor of your late husband and your sons. You beat me because you were afraid of me. You knew that as long as Alejandro loved me, you had no power left in this house.”

“Shut your mouth!” Victoria shrieked, raising her hand to slap Elena across the face.

Before her hand could descend, I caught her wrist in mid-air. My grip was like a steel vise. Victoria gasped as the pressure caused her to drop to her knees.

“Never again, Mother,” I whispered, looking down at the woman who gave me life, feeling nothing but pity and absolute disgust. “Your reign in this home is over.”

Outside, red and blue lights began flashing through the grand floor-to-ceiling windows of the parlor. Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder until multiple law enforcement vehicles screeched to a halt in the driveway.

The heavy front doors swung open again, and armed Federal Agents flooded into the foyer, led by Special Agent Marcus Vance—my cousin from the internal investigations unit whom I had contacted the moment I unlocked my safe.

“Doña Victoria Vance? Ricardo Vance?” Agent Marcus said, pulling out a thick set of federal arrest warrants. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, financial fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit treason.”

“You can’t arrest me!” Victoria screamed as an agent stepped forward and pulled her hands behind her back, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her delicate wrists. “I am Victoria Vance! Do you know who I am?!”

“We know exactly who you are,” Agent Marcus replied coldly. “Take them away.”

As Ricardo and Victoria were dragged out of the mansion into the pouring rain, shouting accusations at each other, the grand parlor fell completely silent.

Elena leaned her head against my shoulder. I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight, feeling the heavy burden of six months finally lifting off her chest.
