Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage in the CloudsThe hum of the jet’s engines was the only sound left in the cabin, but to me, it sounded like a roaring thunderstorm inside my head.

"What do you mean you can't let me go home?" My voice shook, barely audible over the soft, rhythmic breathing of the baby nestled against my chest. Little Mia—that was her name, as I’d soon learn—was fast asleep, her tiny stomach finally full, her small fist clutching the soft wool of my sweater.

Michael Volkov took a single step closer. Up close, his presence was staggering. His dark grey eyes weren't those of a ruthless mob boss in that moment; they were the eyes of a predator who had just found something precious and refused to let the world steal it back.

"I mean, Emily," Michael said, his deep voice carrying an undeniable weight of authority, "that five minutes ago, my daughter was slipping away. You brought her back. Do you honestly think I’m going to let the woman who kept my child alive walk away into the dark night of New York City?"

"I have a life!" I choked out, tears stinging my eyes. "I have... I have a house. My husband, my twin boys—"

"Your husband and sons died three months ago on Interstate 87," Michael interrupted, his tone devoid of cruelty, yet terrifying in its accuracy. "You haven't left your house in ninety days except to board this flight to visit your sister in Chicago. You live with ghosts, Emily. You don't have a life—you have a crime scene of memories."

My breath hitched. How did he know?

"I make it my business to know everything about everyone on my plane," Michael continued softly, reaching out with a single, tattoo-inked finger to brush a strand of hair behind my ear. His touch sent a shiver down my spine—a mix of absolute terror and an electric shock of unwanted awareness. "I am offering you protection. A purpose. My daughter needs milk, and she needs a mother. You need a reason to keep breathing."

"You're holding me hostage," I whispered.

"I am giving you a kingdom," he corrected. "The moment we land, you belong to the Volkov compound. Not as a prisoner, Emily. As the most protected woman in North America."

Before I could protest, the plane lurched slightly as it began its descent into private tarmac. Outside the window, the neon lights of Manhattan glowed like scattered jewels. But as I looked down at the helpless baby in my arms, I realized the terrifying truth: the cabin doors weren't the only things locked shut. My heart was trapped, too.
