Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Secret

The silence on the Moretti estate driveway was thick enough to choke on. Twenty armed men stood frozen like statues, their hands hovering fractionally closer to their holsters. Marco Bellini’s easy smile had completely vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened mask that revealed the lethal killer hiding beneath his tailored suit.
"I checked the perimeter gates at two in the morning, Dante," Marco said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "Standard protocol. You know that. The child was half-asleep, seeing shadows in the moonlight."
Dante Moretti did not blink. His dark eyes remained locked onto his most trusted lieutenant. For seven years, Marco had taken bullets for him, managed his most sensitive shipments, and stood at his right hand during blood-soaked turf wars. Yet, Dante’s gaze did not waver. He slowly stood up, towering over both Marco and the terrified Claire, who still cluthed little Lily tightly against her chest.
"A shadow doesn't plant a thermal detonator beneath a passenger-side chassis, Marco," Dante said softly.
The air left Marco’s lungs. That single sentence was a death sentence. Marco hadn't mentioned a bomb—because there was no physical way anyone could know what was underneath that car unless they had put it there or watched it happen.
Before Marco could draw his weapon, Dante’s hand moved with blinding, unnatural speed. A suppressed gunshot echoed sharply against the marble facade of the mansion. Marco stumbled backward, clutching a bleeding shoulder, while four of Dante’s elite guards tackled him to the pavement, pinning him face-first into the crushed stone.

Claire trembled, pressing her hands over Lily’s eyes. "Please," she whispered to Dante, her voice cracking. "We didn't mean to see this. Just let us go. We'll leave the estate today. We'll never say a word."
Dante turned his head slowly, his dark eyes fixing on Claire. There was no warmth in them, only an terrifying abyss. "Go? Mrs. Bennett, you and your daughter just walked straight into the middle of a war zone. And in my world, dead witnesses are the only ones who keep secrets."
