Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The silence in the grand foyer was so absolute that the single drop of red wine spilling from the stepmother’s fingers sounded like a gunshot. Clink. The crystal stemware slipped from Elena’s manicured hand, shattering against the imported Italian marble tiles, staining the pristine white stone the color of fresh blood.
Arthur Vance did not blink. His eyes, usually calculating and cold during corporate boardroom acquisitions, locked onto the trembling figure on the floor. The girl in the ill-fitting maid uniform—her knees bruised, her knuckles raw and bleeding from caustic industrial bleach—was not just any servant. She was Chloe Vance, his only daughter, whom he had believed was currently studying economics at an elite university in Switzerland.
"Elena," Arthur’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it vibrated with a terrifying, controlled fury that made the marble pillars seem to tremble. "Explain to me why the heir to the Vance International conglomerate is scrubbing my foyer floor with a rag."
Elena’s face drained of color, her carefully maintained socialite poise fracturing instantly. She opened and closed her mouth, her chest heaving as she tried to force a laugh. "Arthur! Darling, you’re back early! I—we were just... it’s a game, a silly little rite of passage, character building! You know how modern youth need to understand the value of—"
"Shut up," Arthur cut her off, his gaze never leaving Chloe. He crossed the cavernous room in three long strides, ignoring the shattered glass crunching beneath his leather soles. He knelt down right beside his daughter in the dirt, completely disregarding the expensive fabric of his bespoke tailored suit.
Chloe couldn't speak. For months, she had endured this psychological torture, told that her father had abandoned her financial support, that he knew and approved of her degradation. Seeing the raw rage and profound agony contort her father’s features broke the final thread of her endurance. She collapsed against his chest, letting out a sob that had been caged in her throat for two hundred agonizing days.

"Daddy," she choked out, her fingers gripping the lapel of his jacket. "She said... she said you signed the transfer papers. She said you wanted me erased."
Arthur’s head snapped up, his gaze fixing on his wife with a look so predatory it made Elena stumble backward into a velvet armchair. The game was over. But what Chloe didn't know—what no one in the room knew—was that Elena’s betrayal was only the tip of a much deeper, far more lethal corporate conspiracy.
