Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Begins

The First DominoAt the reception desk downstairs, Chloe was still laughing, her expression smug as she pointed toward the exit. "Well? Are you going to walk out, or do I need to call the guards to physically remove you and your brat?"

I didn't answer her. I knelt down, gathered Sophia into my arms, and pulled her close, burying her face against my shoulder so she couldn't see the ugly mockery on the secretary's face.

"Mommy, why is that lady being mean?" Sophia whispered, her small hands clutching the paper necklace.

"She isn't important, sweet girl," I whispered back, kissing the top of her head. "We're going to watch something very interesting happen right now."

At that exact second, Chloe's smartphone buzzed violently on the desk.

Then, the phone belonging to the security guard standing near the elevators buzzed.

Then, across the entire lobby, dozens of phones began to ring, chime, and vibrate in a synchronized wave of digital panic.

Chloe frowned, picking up her phone. "What on earth...?"

She swiped the screen, and the color instantly drained from her carefully contoured face. Her eyes widened in raw, unadulterated horror. Her jaw slackened.

"T-this... this has to be a mistake," she stammered, staring at the notification banner.

"What is it, Chloe?" the security guard asked, pulling up his own screen. His face went ghostly pale. "Oh, God... my banking app... my account balance is zero. It says my direct deposit has been revoked."

Chloe tapped frantically on her corporate email app.

CRITICAL ALERT: ZENITH TOWER ASSET FREEZE. ALL ACCESS PRIVILEGES REVOKED. BUILDING MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY TRANSFERRED TO STERLING HOLDINGS.

Her head snapped up, her terrified eyes locking onto mine. For the first time, she saw the reality of who was standing before her. She didn't see a woman in an inexpensive coat; she saw the abyss.

"You..." Chloe whispered, her voice trembling so violently she could barely form the words. "What did you... who are you?"

I didn't blink. I simply adjusted Sophia in my arms and walked past her toward the private executive elevators—the ones that required a level-one clearance code that had just been erased from the system.

As I approached, the security gates didn't lock. Instead, the brass doors slid open smoothly, welcoming me.

Panic in the BallroomUpstairs, the silence was broken by the frantic chiming of fifty smartphones simultaneously.

Dominic frowned, pulling his phone out of his breast pocket. "What kind of spam attack is—"

He tapped his screen, expecting to see a congratulatory notification from Vanguard about the closing of the funding round. Instead, his biometric login failed twice before his corporate email client flashed a blinding crimson alert across the OLED display.

URGENT NOTICE: ACCOUNT TERMINATED

Vance Industries corporate accounts ending in -4892 have been frozen by order of the Federal Reserve and Sterling Holdings Trust due to immediate receivership and asset seizure.

Dominic’s breath hitched. He stared at the screen, his brain refusing to process the words. "No... no, that's impossible. We just closed the Series C..."

Around him, pandemonium erupted.

Arthur Pendelton dropped his champagne flute, the crystal shattering on the marble floor as he stared at his stock portfolio app. "My shares... my holdings in Vance Industries... they're trading at zero! The company has been delisted!"

"Dominic!" Evelyn screamed, grabbing his arm, her makeup looking suddenly ridiculous under the harsh lighting. "What is happening? My father's shipping contracts with your firm—they've been canceled! Our logistics accounts have been wiped!"

Dominic staggered backward, the color entirely drained from his face. Beads of cold sweat broke out across his forehead. He looked around the room at his board members, his investors, his new family—all of them staring at him not with awe, but with sudden, rabid panic.

"It's a glitch," Dominic muttered, his voice cracking wildly. "It has to be a system error! I'll call our chief financial officer—I'll call our legal team—"

"You can call whoever you like, Dominic."

The smooth, icy voice echoed effortlessly across the vast ballroom, cutting through the rising tide of hysteria.

Every head snapped toward the grand double doors.

There, standing quietly with a small child cradled in her arms, was Vivienne.
