Chapter 4 - The Mask Slips

The Entrance of the True QueenThe ballroom fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
Dominic blinked, staring as if he were seeing a ghost. His eyes traveled from Vivienne’s calm, impassive face down to her simple, unbranded coat, and then to the small girl in her arms clutching a tacky paper necklace made of glitter and heart stickers.
"V-Vivienne?" Dominic stammered, taking a hesitant step forward, his voice a pathetic squeak. "What... what are you doing here? How did you get past security? And... and why are you dressed like that?"
Evelyn stepped forward, her face twisted in utter disgust and disbelief. "Dominic! Is this the suburban nobody you were supposed to have divorced months ago? You told me she signed the papers! You told me she was out of your life!"
Dominic ignored Evelyn, his eyes darting frantically between Vivienne and the panicking investors behind him. "Vivienne, honey, listen to me," he said, forcing a sickly, pleading smile onto his face as he walked toward her. "This is a bad time. We're having a private corporate event, and you and the kid... you shouldn't be here. Go home. I'll call you later, we'll talk about the allowance—"
"Allowance?"
The word dropped into the silence like a falling anvil.
Vivienne didn't flinch. She gently set Sophia down on her feet, adjusting the little girl's pink jacket with maternal tenderness.
"Sophia, sweetie," Vivienne said softly, her voice carrying clearly across the silent room. "Go stand over by that pillar. Mommy needs to have a very short conversation with the man who used to live in our house."
"Okay, Mommy," Sophia chirped happily, clutching her paper necklace and skipping toward the marble pillar, completely unfazed by the hundred terrified executives staring at her.
Vivienne straightened up. She turned her gaze to Dominic. The transformation was instantaneous—the gentle, quiet housewife vanished, replaced by the indomitable aura of a Sterling.
"You called me a mistake, Dominic," Vivienne said, her voice completely level, yet every word sliced through the room like a scalpel. "You told your little mistress that I lacked ambition. You whispered to your board members that I was dead weight holding you back from the big leagues."
Dominic’s chest heaved. He felt a sudden, primal terror clawing at his throat—a terror he couldn't explain, rooted deep in the marrow of his bones.
"Vivienne... what are you talking about? You're just a schoolteacher's daughter from Ohio—"
"Am I?" Vivienne tilted her head, a cold, humorless smile touching her lips. "Let me ask you something, Dominic. Have you ever wondered why your failing startup in 2019—the one that was six million dollars in debt and blacklisted by every bank in the tri-state area—suddenly received an anonymous fifty-million-dollar angel investment?"
Dominic froze. His breath caught in his windpipe. "T-That was... that was Vanguard..."
"Vanguard is a shell company managed by the Sterling family trust," Vivienne stated calmly. "Every patent you claim to have invented? Bought and paid for by Sterling capital. Every government contract you landed? Secured by my eldest brother in the Senate. Every crisis that nearly bankrupted you that mysteriously vanished overnight? Cleaned up by my third brother, Victor."
The color vanished from Dominic’s face entirely. He looked like a man who had just stepped off a cliff and realized there was no ground beneath him.
"No..." he whispered, shaking his head frantically. "No, that's impossible... you're Vivienne Sterling? The Sterlings? The political and financial dynasty?!"
"You didn't want to know my last name," Vivienne replied smoothly. "You were too busy building an empire on borrowed money, borrowed luck, and my family's quiet charity. You thought you married a stray cat you could abandon when a richer dog walked into your life."
Arthur Pendelton staggered forward, grabbing Dominic by the lapel of his expensive suit. "Dominic! Is this true?! Did you build this company on family handouts while pretending to be a self-made genius?!"
May you like
"Arthur, wait—it's not what you think—" Dominic panicked, trying to pry the old man's fingers off his jacket.
"You ruined us!" Evelyn shrieked, her aristocratic poise completely shattering as she lunged at Dominic, clawing at his face with her acrylic nails. "You filthy fraud! You brought us into a deal backed by a family you betrayed?! My father's entire shipping fleet is going under because of your lies!"
