Chapter 10 - The Final TwistI tore open the brown envelope with shaking fingers, pulling out the printed bank statements and legal documents Sarah had brought.

My eyes scanned the account numbers, and the breath froze in my chest.
It wasn't just our personal savings. Ryan had embezzled funds from the trust fund my late father had left me—money that was legally protected, money that Ryan had co-signatory access to as my husband.
He hadn't just betrayed me emotionally. He had committed grand larceny.
"Mark thought he got away with it," Sarah whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek. "He thought he could take the money and start over. But he didn't know I kept copies of every single text message, every email, every threat he sent to your sister before the baby was born."
She reached into the envelope and pulled out a final, folded sheet of paper—a printed email chain between Mark and Ryan.
I unfolded it and began to read.
Mark: "If you don't pay me to walk away, I'm going to tell Beth the truth about whose baby Emily is carrying. Unless... unless you want to make it worth my while." Ryan: "Name your price. Just leave Beth out of this. She can never know." Mark: "45 grand. Wire it by Friday, and I sign the waiver."
I stared at the screen capture of the email, my mind spinning into a dark, terrifying realization.
Ryan hadn't just been protecting Emily. He had been blackmailed.
Mark Sterling had found out about the affair before anyone else, and he had used it to bleed Ryan dry, threatening to blow up my entire life if Ryan didn't pay up. And Ryan, in his desperate attempt to keep me from finding out the truth about his unfaithfulness, had paid the ransom using my father's estate money, forged my signature on adoption papers, and lied to my face every single day.
"Where is Mark now?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.
Sarah gave a bitter, humorless smile. "He’s gone. I packed his bags and threw them out onto the front lawn this morning before I came here. And then I called the police."
She looked straight into my eyes.
"I'm pressing charges for extortion, Beth. And I figured you'd want to know, because your name is on those bank accounts too. The authorities are already looking into the wire transfers."
I looked down at the papers in my hand.
Ryan thought he was protecting me by keeping the secret. He thought by paying off Mark and securing the adoption behind my back, he could sweep his sins under the rug and keep our marriage intact.
Instead, his cowardice and lies had created a web so tangled and toxic that it had finally collapsed under its own weight, dragging everyone down with it.
I looked up at Sarah and nodded slowly.
"Thank you, Sarah," I said softly.
"I'm sorry, Beth," she whispered, turning around and walking down my front steps toward her car.
I closed the front door, locked it, and walked slowly back into the kitchen.
The manila folder Ryan had left behind still sat on the kitchen island. Beside it, my phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unknown number—likely the detective handling the financial fraud case.

I picked up my phone, swiped to answer, and stared out the window at the empty street where my husband used to park his car.
"This is Beth Walker," I said into the phone, my voice steady, cold, and entirely free of tears. "I have some information you're going to want to hear."
