Chapter 5 - The ForgeryThe paper shook so violently in my hand that the words blurred together into gray streaks.

Adoptive Parents: Ryan Walker and Beth Walker.
I stared at the signatures at the bottom of the page. Ryanâs signature was clean, firm, and unmistakable.
Right beside it was mine.
Except... I had never signed this.
My breath hitched, turning into a shallow, panicked gasp. I traced the clumsy loops of my own name with a shaking finger. It was a forgery. A terrifyingly good forgery, but a forgery nonetheless. Someone had practiced my handwritingâthe way I looped my 'B', the sharp slash of my 'h'.
Why? Why would Ryan forge my signature on an adoption document for my sisterâs baby with our married neighbor?
Unless...
My mind raced backward through the past six months, violently piecing together every strange coincidence, every late-night phone call, every weird excuse Ryan had given me.
âRunning late. Client emergency.â âI need you to sign this form for our joint tax audit, honey. Right here on the bottom line, don't worry about reading the multi-page annex, it's just standard corporate compliance.â
That night three months ago. The night Ryan had handed me a clipboard while I was half-asleep on the couch, watching a late-night movie. I had signed it without looking because I trusted him with my life.
He hadn't been having me sign tax documents. He had tricked me into signing away my consent to adopt my own cheating sister's baby.
"No," I whispered aloud to the empty nursery. "No, no, no."
My phone buzzed again on the dresser. I snatched it up. It wasn't a text this time. It was an email notification from our joint bank account.
I unlocked my phone with a trembling thumb and opened the banking app.
My eyes locked onto the recent transactions, and my stomach plummeted into a bottomless pit.
Wire Transfer - Outgoing: $45,000 Recipient: Mark Sterling Memo: Final Settlement & Legal Waiver
Forty-five thousand dollars. Almost our entire down payment fund for the house we were supposed to buy next year. Gone. Transferred to Mark Sterling just four days ago.
And beneath that transaction, another one: St. Catherineâs Hospital Medical Deposit: $12,500
Ryan hadn't just been keeping a secret. He had orchestrated an entire, multi-layered conspiracy behind my back, draining our savings, forging my signature, and cutting a financial deal with our neighbor to secure custody of Emilyâs baby.
Why would Ryan want Mark and Emily's baby so badly that he would commit fraud, lie to me for months, and risk our entire marriage?
Unless it wasn't Mark's baby at all.

The thought struck me with the force of a freight train, leaving me breathless and dizzy.
I dropped the papers, grabbed my car keys off the kitchen counter, and bolted out the front door into the chilly night air.
