Chapter 4 - THE FOURTH-FLOOR REFUGE

Room 402 was an upgraded VIP suite, completely different from the standard recovery rooms. It smelled of lavender and fresh linen, featuring a plush leather sofa, a private bathroom, and a large window overlooking the rain-drenched Chicago skyline.

Claire locked the door with a trembling click, sliding the heavy security chain into place.

She collapsed onto the edge of the king-sized bed, clutching Lily, who was fast asleep, her breathing finally deep and regular. The fever had broken completely, leaving the little girl’s skin cool and damp.

“We need to leave,” Claire whispered to herself, staring frantically toward the door. “We need to pack our bags, walk out the back exit, and never, ever come back to this hospital.”

But as she reached into her pocket for her phone, her fingers brushed against a small, cold piece of hard plastic.

She pulled it out. It was a matte-black metal card, heavy and smooth, embossed with a single stylized 'H' and a string of golden alphanumeric digits. Roman’s card. He had slipped it into her pocket when she took Lily from the bed.

“Room 402. My card is in the drawer.”

He hadn’t just told her where to go; he had given her the key to his kingdom.

Suddenly, a soft electronic chime echoed from the wall-mounted television across the room. The screen flickered, bypassing the cable broadcast, and automatically switched to a live security feed.

Claire froze, her breath catching in her throat.

It was a camera angle from Room 317.

She could see Roman standing tall, leaning against the IV pole, glaring down at Marcus Vance. Even without audio, the body language was screaming violence. She watched as Marcus slowly backed away toward the door, offering a tight, venomous nod before slipping out of the frame.

Then, something impossible happened.

On the screen, Roman turned his head directly toward the upper corner of the room—straight into the lens of the hidden camera—and looked right at her.

As if he knew the feed was being broadcast upstairs. As if he was watching her watch him.

Slowly, deliberately, Roman raised two fingers to his temple, gave a crisp, silent salute, and then slammed his fist directly into the camera lens, plunging the screen into instant static.

Claire gasped, dropping the remote. Her hands shook violently. This wasn't just a turf war between mobsters. This was a chess match where she and Lily had accidentally been placed right on the front lines.

Before she could calm her racing thoughts, a sharp, metallic knock echoed at the door of Room 402.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

It wasn't the polite, double-tap of a nurse. It was heavy, rhythmic, and sharp.

“Ms. Bennett?” a muffled voice called out from the hallway. It was smooth, professional, but laced with an icy edge. “Open the door, please. Mr. Vance sent me to check on your daughter's medical chart. We want to make sure she gets discharged safely.”

Claire’s blood ran cold.

Marcus hadn't given up. He had sent someone up.

She looked at the heavy door, then down at sleeping Lily, and finally at the matte-black metal card clutched in her sweaty palm. She had two choices: open the door and surrender to whatever trap Marcus had laid, or use Roman’s card to trigger the suite's emergency lockdown feature.

The knock came again, louder this time. The door handle rattled violently.

“Ms. Bennett. Don’t make this difficult.”

Claire didn't answer. With a desperate prayer, she jammed the black metal card into the digital slot beside the door frame.

A green light flashed. The deadbolts slammed into place with a heavy, satisfying thud.

Outside, a muffled curse echoed down the hallway, followed by the terrifying sound of a keycard being forced against the reader—and the soft, rhythmic beep of an electronic override code being punched in.
