Chapter 7 - THE BETRAYAL IN THE BASEMENT

The private elevator ground to a halt with a heavy, metallic thud, settling deep beneath the sub-basement levels of Saint Mark Medical Center.

The doors slid open to reveal a vast, dimly lit concrete loading dock where ambulances usually dropped off covert cargo away from prying eyes. The air here was damp, smelling of ozone, engine exhaust, and wet pavement. A cold draft whipped through the open bay doors, carrying the relentless sound of the Chicago rain slamming against the asphalt outside.

Roman stepped out of the elevator first, his eyes scanning the shadows, one arm securely cradling sleeping Lily against his chest, while his other hand instinctively curled into a fist.

Claire followed close behind him, wrapping her arms around herself to ward off the biting chill.

“We have an armored SUV waiting in Bay 3,” Roman said, his voice low and calculating. “Once we’re inside, we head to the safehouse off Lake Michigan. You and your daughter are under my personal protection from this second forward.”

“Protection from who, Roman?” Claire asked, her voice cracking under the weight of the sheer madness of the last two hours. “Who is doing this? Is it really just Marcus?”

Before Roman could answer, a slow, mocking round of applause echoed off the concrete walls of the loading dock.

Clap... clap... clap...

From the shadows of Bay 3, step by deliberate step, a figure emerged into the harsh glare of the overhead flickering fluorescent lights.

It wasn't Marcus Vance.

It was Dr. Hayes.

The mild-mannered, bespectacled chief of staff of Saint Mark Medical Center was wearing a clean white lab coat, but his expression was entirely transformed. The nervous, flustered doctor was completely gone. In his place stood a cold, calculating mastermind holding a heavy-duty submachine gun, flanked by four heavily armed mercenaries wearing unmarked black tactical gear.

Roman stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes flared with a sudden, lethal realization.

“Dr. Hayes,” Roman said, his voice dropping an octave into a low, menacing growl. “I should have known the leak wasn't just in the corporate office. It was right here in the operating room.”

Hayes smiled, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses with the barrel of his gun.

“Surprised, Mr. Hale? You shouldn't be,” Hayes said smoothly, his voice devoid of all its previous professional warmth. “You built an empire on blood, corruption, and corporate buyouts. But you forgot one simple rule of modern medicine: diagnostics are expensive, and research grants from international syndicates pay much better than insurance claims.”

Claire clutched her chest, staring in absolute horror between the doctor and Roman. “You... you were the one treating him? You were supposed to save him!”

“I did save him, my dear,” Hayes laughed dryly, gesturing toward Roman with his weapon. “We kept his heart beating for twenty-one days while our buyers extracted every single encrypted biometric security key, financial routing code, and offshore account password straight from his subconscious neural activity using experimental neuro-mapping technology. He was never supposed to wake up. Marcus was just a convenient scapegoat to take the fall when your little heart monitor crashed the server.”

Roman’s jaw tightened so hard a vein bulged violently at his temple. He slowly lowered Lily into Claire’s arms, whispering fiercely, “Hold her tight. Do not let go.”

“You think your data is any good to them, Hayes?” Roman stepped forward, ignoring the fresh blood soaking through the linen bandage over his abdomen. “The encryption keys rotate every twenty-four hours. Without me alive to authorize the transfer codes, your buyers just bought an expensive paperweight.”

Hayes’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. The amusement in his eyes vanished, replaced by cold, calculated panic.

“Then I guess we’ll just have to harvest the keys the hard way,” Hayes snarled, raising his weapon straight toward Roman’s chest. “Kill the woman and the kid. Put three more bullets into the boss. Make it look like a botched cartel hit.”

The four mercenaries raised their rifles in unison.

The barrels locked directly onto Claire and sleeping Lily.

Time seemed to slow down to a crawl. The rain pounded outside. The fluorescent light buzzed overhead. And Roman Hale—the most feared man in Chicago—did something that defied every law of survival.

He didn't step back. He threw himself directly into the line of fire.
