Chapter 1 - THE WAKE-UP CALLI didn't storm the mansion with guns blazing. That was for amateurs. I walked back into the dining room, my footsteps silent on the marble floor. My mother-in-law, Martha, looked up, her expression shifting from annoyance to a flicker of genuine confusion when she saw my eyes.

"Ethan, you have a lot of nerve coming back in here with that tone," she sneered.
"I’m not here to talk, Martha," I said, my voice dropping to a register that made the air in the room feel heavy. I walked to the table and gathered the transfer documents, slowly tearing them into confetti-sized pieces.

"What do you think you’re doing?" Natalie screamed, jumping up. "That is our ticket to a new life!"
"Your life ended twenty minutes ago," I replied. I tapped my phone screen, and suddenly, the flat-screen TV on the wall flickered to life. It showed a live feed of their private offshore bank accounts. Every number was turning to zero.
