Chapter 1

“There’s filthy blood running through this family!” roared Don Eduardo Salcedo as he raised a metal bar over his six-year-old grandson.

Nicolás barely managed to wrap his arms around Mateo before the first blow slammed into his back.

The second struck near the base of his skull.

After that...

There was only dust, loose rocks, and the little boy's cries echoing from the bottom of an abandoned ravine behind a quarry on the outskirts of Tepatitlán.

Hours later, Gabriel Barragán found his son lying on top of his grandson, using his own body as a shield.

Both of them had torn clothes and were covered with bruises and injuries.

“Dad... it was my father-in-law,” Nicolás whispered weakly. “He said our blood disgraced the Salcedo family.”

Gabriel wasted no time.

He had once served as a military paramedic and still kept a fully stocked field medical kit.

He carried both of them home, cleaned their wounds, immobilized Nicolás's injured arm, and stayed by Mateo's side to make sure the little boy didn't lose consciousness.

Then he sent a text message to his brother, Arturo.

It's time. Remember what Grandpa taught us.

The Barragán family knew what it meant to be looked down upon.

Their grandfather, Tomás, had married Amparo, a young woman raised in an orphanage after her family lost their land.

For years people told him she wasn't worthy of carrying the Barragán name.

Tomás always answered the same way.

“A person's dignity doesn't come from a last name. It shows itself when life tries to bury you.”

In a small cabin in Tapalpa, he taught Gabriel and Arturo two rules.

Never mistake hiding for being safe.

And never reach into muddy water.

First, wait until you can see the bottom.

Gabriel eventually joined the Army.

Arturo built a career in private security.

Nicolás studied computer systems and later married Violeta Salcedo, the heiress to the most powerful agricultural conglomerate in Los Altos de Jalisco.

At the wedding, Don Eduardo greeted Gabriel with nothing more than two fingers.

“Someone keep an eye on the new in-law,” he joked. “We wouldn't want him getting lost among decent people.”

Over the next eight years, Nicolás slowly drifted away from his own family.

He supervised packing plants, grain elevators, and export operations for the Salcedo empire.

Then Mateo began getting sick.

At four years old, he lost weight, suffered constant nausea, and barely had the strength to stand.

No doctor could determine the cause.

When Nicolás finally moved his family away from his in-laws' estate...

Mateo recovered with astonishing speed.

Some time later, Nicolás installed a new digital management system throughout the Salcedo warehouses.

What he uncovered shocked him.

Thousands of tons of grain that didn't exist.

Government subsidies collected for phantom ranches.

Millions of pesos funneled into shell companies.

Then he made one terrible mistake.

He took the evidence directly to Don Eduardo.

“We're family,” Nicolás said. “We can fix this before the authorities get involved.”

His father-in-law smiled.

He quietly kept the copies.

Then, three weeks later, he invited Nicolás to visit a piece of land where he supposedly planned to build a house for Mateo.

Now Nicolás and his son lay injured inside Gabriel's home.

“Don't go to the police,” Nicolás warned. “He controls officers, government officials, and newspapers. If he finds out we're still alive... he'll finish what he started.”

Gabriel picked up a pair of scissors.

He cut apart the four bank cards the Salcedo family had given the couple as wedding gifts.

Then he snapped every SIM card from their phones.

At 7:00 the next morning, Procopio, a local forest ranger, knocked on the door.

“I found tire tracks near the quarry,” he said. “There was a black pickup looking for footprints.”

He looked Gabriel in the eyes.

“Tell me, my friend... do you need help hiding?”

He paused.

“Or do you need help fighting?”

Before Gabriel could answer...

A dark pickup truck pulled up in front of the house.

Its headlights went out.

Gabriel lifted Mateo into his arms.

Despite the pain, Nicolás forced himself to stand.

Then...

Someone opened the front door from the outside.

May you like

And whatever stepped through that doorway...

Would change the fate of both families forever.
