Chapter 2 - The Fall of the MaskThe silence inside room 402 was so absolute that the hum of the heart monitor sounded like gunfire.

Mark’s face had drained of all color, shifting from a triumphant smirk to a horrifying, hollow pale. His mouth opened, closed, and opened again, but no sound came out. Beside him, the woman—whose name was Sarah, though Anna only knew her as the slick opportunist wearing an engagement ring bought with lies—was frozen in a rigid, perfect military stance. Her eyes were fixed straight ahead, dilated with pure terror.
"At ease, Major," General Vance said coldly, his eyes sweeping over Sarah. "Though I am curious as to why my newly assigned Executive Officer is standing in a maternity ward accompanying a civilian who appears to be trespassing in a secure military medical facility."
"Sir—" Sarah’s voice trembled, all the polished elegance she had displayed moments ago evaporating into thin air. "I... I was unaware that..."
"You were unaware that the officer whose staff you were reassigned to lead is Colonel Anna Whitmore?" General Vance’s voice cut through the room like a steel razor. "The same Colonel Whitmore who spent the last fourteen months coordinating tactical logistics across three overseas theaters while managing high-priority trust assets?"
Mark finally found his voice, though it sounded weak, pathetic, and cracked with disbelief. "Anna? A... a Colonel? No. No, that’s impossible. She’s a civilian coordinator! She works behind a desk for DoD communications! She... she’s dead weight!"
General Vance turned his full, intimidating frame toward Mark. The three stars on his collar caught the fluorescent light. "DoD Communications is her cover title for non-cleared personnel, including spouse registration files when operational security requires it. Colonel Whitmore is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. And who, precisely, are you to address a senior officer with such disrespect?"
"I'm her husband!" Mark burst out, stepping forward, though his confidence was entirely shattered. "I'm her husband, and I have rights! We live together—well, we did—and she hid this from me! She lied to me!"
"You kicked her out," a voice broke in from the doorway.
It was Mrs. Rivera. The elderly neighbor walked into the room, holding a small plastic cup of ice chips. Her eyes were burning with rage as she pointed a finger directly at Mark’s chest. "You threw her out into the cold night while she was in active labor. You called her dead weight and threw her bag on the porch. I had to drag her to my car while she was screaming in pain. You didn't even care if the baby lived or died!"
General Vance’s eyes narrowed into dark slits as he absorbed the information. He turned slowly back to Sarah. "Major Sarah Lin. Is this civilian the man you brought into this room? And are you involved in domestic misconduct involving a superior officer?"
Sarah looked as though she might faint. Her military career, built over twelve years of disciplined climbing, was flashing before her eyes. "Sir! I... I was told they were divorced! He told me she was an unemployed ex-military clerk who refused to sign separation papers!"
"She's lying to save her own skin!" Mark yelled, turning on Sarah in desperation. "You knew everything! You knew I wanted her out of the house so we could list it!"
"Enough!" General Vance barked.
The command was so powerful that even the nurses outside the open door stopped in their tracks. General Vance looked at Anna, who sat upright in her bed, her baby girl sleeping peacefully in the clear plastic bassinet beside her. Anna had not said a single word since the General walked in. She didn't need to. Her eyes were cold, calculated, and completely devoid of the warmth Mark had taken for granted for five years.
"Colonel Whitmore," Vance said, his tone softening with genuine respect. "How would you like to handle this breach of protocol?"
Anna reached out, softly running a finger over her newborn daughter’s forehead. "General Vance, Major Lin is relieved of her duties as my Executive Officer immediately pending an Art. 133 investigation for conduct unbecoming an officer. As for the civilian..."
Anna finally looked Mark dead in the eye.
"Call security. He is trespassing on federal military property."
"Anna, wait!" Mark panicked as two armed Military Police (MP) officers stepped into the room, their boots echoing loudly against the floor. "You can't do this! We’re married! Half of everything you have is mine! The house, your pay, your pension—"
"You might want to check the deed of the house, Mark," Anna said softly, a deadly calm in her voice. "And you might want to call your lawyer about the trust fund my grandfather left me. You thought you were kicking me out of your house. But the deed was transferred to my sole family trust three weeks ago. You don't own that house, Mark. You’re squatting on federal trust property."
The MPs grabbed Mark by both arms, twisting them behind his back.
"Anna! Anna, talk to me! We can work this out!" Mark screamed as he was forcibly dragged down the corridor, his sneakers squeaking against the polished linoleum. Sarah hurried behind them, her face buried in her hands to hide her shame from the personnel standing in the hallway.

Anna took a deep breath, looking down at her daughter.
"The fun is just beginning, Mark," she whispered to the quiet room.
