Chapter 7 - The Mastermind's Final PlayThe federal criminal trial of Mark Crawford was swift and brutal.

Exposed by his own wife's meticulous financial records, Mark had no defense left. His legal team had collapsed under the weight of overwhelming evidence provided by the IRS, the Department of Defense, and Eleanor Vance’s forensic team.
Mark was convicted on nine counts of federal tax evasion, wire fraud, and grand embezzlement.
On the day of sentencing, Anna walked into the courtroom wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit. She carried her baby daughter, Victoria, in a front carrier, looking calm, radiant, and entirely unbothered by the media circus outside the courthouse steps.
Mark sat in the dock, dressed in orange, looking like a ghost of the arrogant man who had thrown her out months ago. He had lost weight, his hair was graying at the temples, and his eyes were hollow with desperation.
"Mark Crawford," the federal judge declared, looking down from the bench. "Your actions demonstrate a shocking lack of moral integrity, personal responsibility, and basic human decency. You betrayed your wife, attempted to defraud her family, and engaged in systematic financial crime."
The judge slammed the gavel down. "I sentence you to twelve years in federal prison at a maximum-security facility, with no possibility of early parole, followed by three years of supervised release. You are further ordered to pay full restitution in the amount of $440,000 to the affected entities."
Mark dropped his head onto the defense table, weeping hysterically.
As the guards pulled him up to take him away, he looked at Anna one last time.
"Anna... please," he choked out, his voice cracked with despair. "Don't let me die in there! Just give me one chance... for the baby..."
Anna walked slowly up to the wooden partition separating the gallery from the well of the court. She looked at him with an expression of cold, detached pity.
"You told me I was dead weight, Mark," Anna said softly. "You thought you were throwing away garbage. But you forgot one thing."
Mark blinked through his tears. "What?"
May you like
"I was never your weight," Anna whispered, leaning in closer so only he could hear. "I was your anchor. And now that you cut me loose, you’re drowning."
She turned around, her high heels clicking firmly against the marble floor as she walked out of the courtroom, holding her baby close to her chest, never looking back.
