CHAPTER 8 — THE SECRET ROOM BENEATH EVELYN'S HOUSE

Headlights appeared outside the cabin.

Three black SUVs surrounded the property.

"They're faster than I expected," Samuel muttered.

He opened a trapdoor hidden beneath an old rug.

"Come with me."

A narrow underground tunnel stretched beneath the cabin.

Cold air rushed through the darkness.

We walked nearly half a mile before emerging inside an abandoned church.

Parked behind it was another truck.

Samuel handed me a folded map.

"This is where Evelyn wanted you to go if everything went wrong."

I unfolded it.

My eyes widened.

It was a blueprint of Evelyn's little house.

One room was circled in red.

The basement.

But there was something strange.

According to the blueprint...

There was another room hidden behind the basement wall.

A room that officially didn't exist.

...

We reached the house just before sunrise.

Margaret was already waiting.

The moment she saw Samuel...

She burst into tears.

"I thought you were dead."

"I had to let everyone believe that."

They embraced silently.

Then Margaret looked at me.

"Aunt Evelyn never stopped preparing for this day."

Together we entered the basement.

The blueprint pointed toward an old wooden bookshelf.

At first glance, it looked ordinary.

Until Samuel pulled one dusty book.

The entire shelf slowly slid sideways.

Revealing a steel door hidden inside the wall.

The brass key from Evelyn's box fit perfectly.

The lock clicked.

The heavy door opened.

Inside was a small underground room.

Perfectly preserved.

Shelves filled with binders.

Hard drives.

Cassette tapes.

Boxes labeled by year.

One wall displayed hundreds of photographs.

Every member of the Covenant.

Every meeting.

Every illegal payment.

Every victim.

Evelyn had spent decades secretly building a case powerful enough to destroy them all.

At the center of the room stood a single wooden desk.

On top rested one sealed envelope.

Across the front were seven words written in Evelyn's familiar handwriting.

"Jacob... you're finally ready for the truth."

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten confession.

The first sentence made my heart stop.

I never became your guardian... because legally, I was already something much more important.

Confused, I turned the page.

A certified birth record slid onto the desk.

My name.

My mother's name.

Then...

Under the line marked Father...

The name wasn't the man I had spent my entire life searching for.

It wasn't the man from the court documents.

It wasn't anyone I recognized.

It was another name entirely.

A billionaire industrialist.

The founder of the Covenant.

The man everyone believed had died twenty-seven years earlier.

Samuel stared at the document in disbelief.

Margaret slowly backed away from the desk.

"No..."

She whispered.

"That can't be possible."

Then the lights inside the hidden room suddenly went dark.

Emergency backup lights flickered red.

A speaker hidden somewhere in the ceiling crackled.

A calm elderly man's voice echoed through the bunker.

"If you've reached this room..."

"...then you've uncovered exactly what I wanted you to find."

My blood ran cold.

Because the voice belonged to the billionaire who was supposed to have been dead for nearly three decades.

And his next words were even more terrifying.

May you like

"Hello, Jacob..."

"...welcome to the family."
