CHAPTER 9 — "WELCOME TO THE FAMILY"

The hidden bunker fell silent.

Only the faint hum of the emergency lights remained.

My pulse pounded so loudly I could barely hear my own breathing.

The recorded voice continued.

"Hello, Jacob... if you're listening to this, it means Evelyn succeeded."

I stared at the ceiling.

The voice was calm.

Measured.

Almost... fatherly.

"I know the birth certificate shocked you."

"It was supposed to."

"Because the man listed as your father..."

"...isn't your biological father."

Samuel looked at me in confusion.

"What?"

Margaret covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

"The certificate was forged."

"It was the only way to hide your true identity."

A mechanical click echoed through the bunker.

A projector hidden in the ceiling flickered to life.

An old video appeared on the far wall.

The man speaking looked to be in his late sixties.

Sharp gray eyes.

Impeccable suit.

The billionaire everyone believed had died twenty-seven years ago.

"My name is Victor Ashcroft."

"I founded the organization known as the Covenant."

I felt my stomach turn.

"So it was all true..."

Victor nodded slowly in the recording.

"Yes."

"And I destroyed it."

Those words stunned everyone.

"I created the Covenant to protect powerful families from corruption."

"But greed poisoned it."

"My partners turned it into a criminal empire."

"They trafficked influence."

"They bought judges."

"They stole inheritances."

"They destroyed innocent lives."

"And when I tried to stop them..."

"They tried to kill me."

He smiled sadly.

"So I let them believe they had succeeded."

Samuel whispered,

"He faked his death..."

Victor continued.

"Evelyn was the only person brave enough to help me."

"Together, we spent twenty-six years collecting evidence."

Every photograph.

Every document.

Every recording in the bunker...

Had been part of one enormous operation.

Then Victor looked directly into the camera.

"Jacob..."

"I knew your mother."

The room froze.

"When she discovered the Covenant's crimes..."

"She refused their money."

"She refused their threats."

"So they murdered her."

I collapsed into the chair behind me.

Everything I had believed about my mother's illness...

Everything...

Had been another lie.

Victor's voice softened.

"She died protecting you."

"Evelyn spent the rest of her life keeping that promise."

Then came the sentence that broke me.

"She never considered you charity."

"She always called you her son."

Tears rolled freely down my face.

For years...

I had believed I used Evelyn.

Now I understood the truth.

She had loved me like family from the very beginning.

Not because she had to.

Because she had promised my mother.

The recording ended with one final instruction.

"Take everything in this room to the FBI."

"But remember..."

"Someone inside the Covenant still knows you're alive."

"And he's closer than you think."

...

None of us noticed the blinking red light hidden beneath the desk.

May you like

Somewhere...

A silent alarm had already been triggered.
