Chapter 7 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF DANTEThe low, vibrating growl from beneath the table cut through the heavy silence like a chainsaw engine idling in a cathedral.

Julian froze mid-step, his hand hovering over the back of his chair. His gaze dropped downward, trying to peer beneath the heavy mahogany leaves of the dining table.
"What is that—" Julian started, his voice cracking.
Before he could finish the sentence, Cerberus slid out from beneath the table like a shadow detaching itself from the dark. He didn't charge, and he didn't bark. He just stood between Julian and the private elevator doors, blocking every possible path to escape, his scarred face twisted into a silent, lethal snarl.
Julian staggered back against the sideboard, knocking over a crystal decanter that shattered into a thousand glittering diamonds across the floor.
"Enzo! Call your dog off!" Julian screamed, all pretense of senatorial dignity completely evaporated. "I'm your uncle! I raised you after your father died!"
"My father died because he trusted you," Enzo said, standing up slowly from his seat. At six-foot-two, with his broad shoulders and cold, unyielding gaze, he looked less like a nephew and more like the grim reaper incarnate. "And you killed an innocent mechanic and his daughter's childhood just to pad your campaign war chest."
Enzo stepped around the table, closing the distance between them step by deliberate step.
"You're done, Julian," Enzo said quietly. "No federal protection. No campaign funds. No syndicate backing. Tomorrow morning, the press will receive the full financial breakdown of your corruption, courtesy of Elena's forensic work."
Julian’s eyes darted frantically toward the window, then toward the elevator, before finally landing on Enzo with a look of pure, venomous hatred.
"You think you've won?" Julian sneered, spitting the words out like poison. "You think running this city makes you a king? You're just a glorified thug with a fancy apartment and a mangy attack dog! The feds are already sniffing around your docks, Enzo. Even if I go down, you're coming with me!"
Enzo didn't flinch. He didn't even raise his voice.
"Maybe," Enzo replied, stopping two feet from his uncle. "But I'll be in a federal penitentiary knowing the debt is paid. And you'll be remembered as the corrupt politician who lost everything to a catering assistant and a stolen puppy."
Julian opened his mouth to retort, but the private elevator chime suddenly chimed—ding.
The doors slid open to reveal four of Enzo’s most trusted senior capos, flanked by two armed federal marshals who had been quietly co-opted into Enzo's network weeks ago.
"Take the Senator to his new accommodations," Enzo ordered, not taking his eyes off his uncle. "Make sure he has plenty of time to reflect on his budget allocations."
The two marshals stepped forward, grabbed Julian by both arms, and slapped heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists before he could utter another word. As they dragged him backward toward the elevator, Julian cursed, spat, and thrashed, his voice echoing down the shaft until the doors slid shut with a dull, final thud.
The penthouse grew quiet again, save for the steady drumming of the rain against the glass walls.
I exhaled a breath I felt like I had been holding for seven long years. My knees felt weak, trembling slightly as the adrenaline finally began to drain out of my system.
Before my legs could give out completely, a strong, warm arm wrapped securely around my waist, pulling me flush against a solid, unyielding chest.
May you like
"You did it," Enzo whispered into my hair, his voice rough and thick with a raw emotion I had never heard from him before. "He's finished."
I tilted my head back, looking up into his dark, intense eyes. The storm outside raged on, but inside, for the first time in seven years, the thunder had finally stopped.
