Chapter 9 - THE UNBROKEN CIRCLESix months later, the rain in New Jersey was falling in a gentle, rhythmic drizzle, washing clean the newly paved driveway of a modern, state-of-the-art veterinary clinic nestled right where my father's old workshop used to stand.

A polished brass plaque by the front door read: The Cerberus Foundation & Animal Rescue.

I stood by the front desk, wearing a crisp white veterinary technician's coat, watching through the large glass window as a golden retriever puppy chased its tail in the enclosed outdoor play yard.

The heavy glass front door swung open, and a tall man in a bespoke charcoal overcoat stepped inside, shaking the autumn mist from his broad shoulders. He carried no guns today, though the quiet, commanding aura of Manhattan's most powerful underworld boss still followed him wherever he went.

Cerberus—now heavier, his coat shining like polished obsidian, though the scars remained as badges of honor—trotted out from the back office, tail wagging heavily, and dropped a squeaky rubber toy right at Enzo's expensive leather shoes.

Enzo chuckled, squatting down to scratch the big pitbull right behind his torn ear. "Hey, old man. Did you miss me?"

He stood back up, walking across the polished epoxy floor toward the front desk, his dark eyes warm and steady as they locked onto mine.

"How's the grand opening going, Doctor?" Enzo asked, leaning his elbows against the counter, a playful smirk touching the corners of his mouth.

"We're fully booked for rescue intakes through the end of the month," I said proudly, resting my chin in my hands and looking up at him. "And the local zoning board approved our expansion plans for the wildlife rehab wing."

Enzo reached across the counter, his warm fingers interlacing with mine, squeezing gently. "I told you that you were wasted in the catering business."

"You did," I admitted, smiling as I stepped out from behind the counter and into his arms. "Though I have to admit, your penthouse kitchen had much better marble."

Enzo wrapped his strong arms securely around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest, burying his face in my hair as the rain tapped a gentle, steady rhythm against the roof above us.

"The penthouse kitchen is yours whenever you want it," Enzo whispered into my ear. "Along with everything else."

We stood there together in the warm, brightly lit clinic, surrounded by the soft barks of recovering animals and the quiet hum of a peaceful life. The stolen puppy had found his way home, and in the process, he had led me straight to mine.
