Chapter 8 - The Final EmpireSix months later, the business world had completely rewritten its textbooks.

Apex Holdings and Vance International officially merged under a single, unified global entity, making it one of the largest corporate conglomerates in the Western Hemisphere. As the newly appointed Global Chairwoman and CEO, my face graced the cover of Forbes and Fortune magazines simultaneously.

The headline above my portrait read:

“THE ARCHITECT OF POWER: HOW LAURA VANCE REBUILT AN EMPIRE FROM THE ASHES.”

A copy of the magazine sat on the polished mahogany desk in my new executive penthouse office overlooking the glittering Miami skyline.

My assistant knocked softly on the door before stepping inside, holding a small silver tray with my afternoon tea.

“Madam Chairwoman, the board members from the European division are waiting on line two for the quarterly review,” she reported efficiently.

“Put them through in five minutes,” I replied, not looking up from the architectural blueprints spread out across my desk for the new national research hospitals we were funding through the foundation.

“Also... there is a letter downstairs at the reception desk for you. Security screened it. It’s from federal prison.”

I paused, my pen hovering over the blueprints.

I knew who it was from. Spencer.

For months, my legal team had received letters from him—begging for money, pleading for forgiveness, claiming that prison life was breaking his spirit, swearing that he still loved me. I had never opened a single one of them.

“Did you open it?” I asked calmly.

“No, ma'am. Do you want me to shred it?” my assistant asked, holding the tray steady.

I looked at the window, watching the sun reflect off the endless ocean horizon where the sky met the sea in a brilliant display of light and strength. I thought back to the woman standing outside the iron gates in her traveling clothes, dragging a silver suitcase, feeling as though her entire world had ended.

How wrong I had been. That day wasn't an ending. It was the moment I finally woke up.

“No,” I said, sliding the blueprints aside and standing up tall. “Leave it unopened. Toss it into the recycling bin on your way out.”

“Yes, Madam Chairwoman.”

She smiled, turned, and closed the office door behind her.

I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, adjusting the cuffs of my tailored blazer, and looked out over the empire I had built, protected, and reclaimed.

And once you build it, no one can ever take it away.
