CHAPTER 10 — THE BETRAYAL WAS INSIDE MY OWN FAMILY

Governor Harrison's words refused to leave my mind.

"You still don't know who betrayed Olivia first."

Even after federal agents surrounded the canyon...

Even after Mark Collins was dragged away in handcuffs...

Even after Emma, Ella, and Rose were finally wrapped in warm blankets by paramedics...

Those words echoed louder than the helicopters overhead.

Someone had betrayed Olivia.

Someone she trusted.

Someone close enough to know where she was going.

Three days later...

The entire country was watching.

Every major news network carried the same headline:

NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR ARRESTED IN MASSIVE CORRUPTION SCANDAL.

Millions had already watched Olivia's prerecorded confession.

Federal investigators recovered the flash drive.

Dozens of officials were arrested within forty-eight hours.

The mountain had finally started giving up its secrets.

But mine...

Mine were only beginning.

I was staying in a secure federal safe house outside Charlotte when Special Agent Rachel Monroe knocked on my door.

She looked exhausted.

She placed a thick evidence folder on the kitchen table.

"We recovered everything from Olivia's hidden bunker."

I nodded.

"And?"

Rachel hesitated.

"There was one file addressed only to you."

My pulse quickened.

She slid a sealed envelope across the table.

The handwriting stopped my heart.

For Ethan... after the arrests.

Olivia.

Even after three years...

Seeing her handwriting still made my chest ache.

Rachel quietly left the room.

"This should be private."

The door clicked shut.

For several long minutes, I simply stared at the envelope.

Finally...

I opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

And one small silver key.

The letter began exactly the way Olivia always started her notes.

"Hi, handsome..."

Tears blurred my vision before I could continue.

"If you're reading this, then you survived."

"I always believed you would."

"There's something I've hidden from you for six years—not because I didn't trust you, but because I loved you too much to let you carry the danger."

I swallowed hard.

"Governor Harrison was right about one thing."

"Someone betrayed me before I died."

My breathing slowed.

"But he doesn't know the whole story."

"The betrayal didn't come from the girls."

"It didn't come from my friends."

"It came from someone sitting at our own dinner table."

The words hit me like a punch.

Our dinner table.

Family.

No...

That couldn't be possible.

Olivia continued.

"Before you accuse anyone... open the box first."

She had underlined the last sentence.

Open the box.

I looked down at the tiny silver key resting in my palm.

Rachel stepped back into the room.

"What is it?"

"I think..." I whispered.

"I think Olivia left something else."

The key matched a safety-deposit box at a small bank in Asheville.

Federal agents accompanied me.

The manager unlocked the vault.

Box 214.

It hadn't been opened in over three years.

Inside sat only three items.

A leather-bound journal.

An old flip phone.

And...

A wedding photograph.

Not ours.

The bride was Olivia.

The groom...

wasn't me.

I stared in disbelief.

The photograph had been taken almost fifteen years earlier.

The young man beside Olivia smiled proudly in a military dress uniform.

His face looked strangely familiar.

Too familiar.

Rachel leaned closer.

"Do you know him?"

I searched my memory.

Then it hit me.

The family reunion.

Christmas.

Our wedding.

Every Thanksgiving.

"Oh... my God..."

Rachel frowned.

"What?"

"My brother."

Her eyes widened.

The groom in the photograph was...

Nathan Brooks.

My older brother.

The man who had introduced me to Olivia.

The man who had stood beside me as my best man.

The man who had cried at Olivia's funeral.

The same man who had comforted me after her death.

My hands began shaking uncontrollably.

"No..."

"This has to be impossible."

Rachel carefully opened the journal.

The first page answered everything.

"Nathan was my husband long before he became your brother again."

"I never stopped blaming myself for what happened."

My vision blurred.

Rachel slowly turned another page.

Inside were dozens of letters.

Every one addressed to Nathan.

None had ever been mailed.

The final letter ended with a single heartbreaking sentence.

"I pray Ethan never learns what his own brother did to us."

The room spun around me.

Nathan.

My own flesh and blood.

What had he done?

Why had Olivia hidden an entire marriage from me?

Before Rachel could say another word...

Her phone rang.

She answered.

The color drained from her face.

"What happened?"

She looked at me in horror.

"Nathan Brooks disappeared two hours ago."

She lowered the phone.

"And before he vanished..."

"...someone murdered the only surviving witness who could explain Olivia's first marriage."

The investigation had just become personal.

And for the first time...

May you like

I realized the greatest lie in my life had never come from Governor Harrison.

It had come from my own family.
