CHAPTER 7 — THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO DIE

The explosion shook the tunnel again.
Chunks of stone crashed from the ceiling.
Rose grabbed my arm.
“We have less than five minutes.”
She ran through the steel door and into a narrow chamber filled with filing cabinets, battery packs, solar equipment, and shelves of emergency supplies.
This wasn't a hiding place.
It was a command center.
Olivia had built it.
“How long have you been here?” I asked.
“Almost three years.”
The answer hit me like a freight train.
Three years.
While I had spent every day drowning in grief...
A sixteen-year-old girl had been living beneath this mountain because my wife had chosen to protect her.
“I wanted to come to Olivia’s funeral,” Rose whispered.
“She wouldn’t let me.”
I stared at her.
“She… wouldn’t let you?”
Rose slowly opened a weathered notebook.
Inside was Olivia’s familiar handwriting.
“If anything happens to me,” the first page read, “Rose must stay hidden until Ethan learns the truth.”
My knees weakened.
“She planned all of this.”
Rose nodded.
“She knew they would kill anyone connected to us.”
Emma suddenly pulled another folder from one of the cabinets.
“There’s more.”
Inside were newspaper clippings.
Insurance reports.
Photographs.
Hospital records.
One photograph made my blood freeze.
It showed Olivia standing beside a black SUV at a gas station.
The timestamp was two days before her fatal accident.
Standing across the parking lot...
Deputy Mark Collins.
And beside him...
Governor Daniel Harrison.
The governor wasn't attending an official event.
He wasn't campaigning.
He wasn't even supposed to be anywhere near these mountains.
Yet there he was.
Watching my wife.
Rose looked directly into my eyes.
“Olivia wasn't killed in an accident.”
My breathing stopped.
“She was murdered.”
The room fell silent.
“She called me the morning she died,” Rose continued.
“She said someone had cut the brake lines on her car.”
My heart pounded so violently I thought it might burst.
“She told me if she couldn't stop them... you would.”
Before I could answer—
Every light inside the bunker suddenly went out.
Emergency sirens began flashing red.
Rose looked toward the security monitor.
“They found the outer tunnel.”
May you like
On the screen, Mark Collins and six armed men were already descending into the mountain.
They were less than three hundred feet away.
