Chapter 8 - THE FINAL CUTThe restaurant was small, tucked away on a quiet cobblestone street in downtown Puebla, far away from the sterile lights and high-stakes drama of Santa Lucía Hospital.

Candlelight flickered across the rustic wooden table. The scent of roasted garlic and fresh rosemary filled the air.

Clara sat across from Julián, swirling a glass of red wine as she looked at him with an amused expression.

"So," she said, her eyes sparkling in the dim light. "Director Robles. Absolute ruler of Santa Lucía. Multi-million-dollar trust fund. How does it feel to be the most dangerous man in Puebla?"

Julián laughed, taking a sip of his water. "Dangerous? Clara, I spent the last two weeks eating hospital gelatin and arguing with physical therapists about whether I'm allowed to walk without a cane. The only thing I'm a danger to right now is this basket of warm bread."

"Well, make sure you don't eat too much," Clara teased. "As your attending nurse, I am officially ordering you to pace yourself. My professional reputation is on the line."

Julián smiled, leaning forward as the waiter quietly placed two plates of exquisite local cuisine before them. The ambient noise of the restaurant faded into a comfortable, warm hum.

He reached across the table, his hand gently covering hers. The rough, calloused fingers of a surgeon meeting the steady, compassionate hands of a master nurse.

"Clara?" Julián asked softly.

"Hmm?"

"Thank you. For staying. For not letting me give up when things got dark in that ICU."

Clara looked down at their joined hands, a soft, genuine smile spreading across her face. She looked back up into his eyes, her gaze steady and unwavering—just as it had been on day one.

"You're a stubborn, overbearing, micro-managing patient, Julián," she whispered, her voice full of warmth. "Somebody had to make sure you didn't accidentally ruin your own life while trying to save everyone else's."

"Does that mean you're willing to stick around for the sequel?" Julián asked, a spark of mischief in his eyes.

Clara raised her wine glass toward him, the candlelight catching the rim.

"Only if you promise to let me be the one in charge... at least when it comes to your diet."

Julián clinked his glass against hers, the clear, bright ring echoing softly in the intimate space.

"Deal."

And as they sat together in the quiet warmth of the Puebla evening, the storms of the past felt a million miles away. Julián Robles had lost a wife, a corrupt colleague, and a mountain of illusion—but in return, he had kept his life, his hospital, and the only person who truly mattered.
