Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT AUDITThe green light on the ICU monitor blinked with a steady, rhythmic pulse—the only witness to the storm brewing in Julián Robles’ chest.

Sixteen hours had passed since the resection of his necrotic bowel. The anesthetic was completely out of his system, leaving behind a dull, throbbing ache along his abdomen that flared whenever he took a deep breath. But physical pain was a distant background noise compared to the digital war being waged on his smartphone.

The screen lit up again. Another notification. This time, it wasn't a court filing—it was an automated alert from the central treasury of Santa Lucía Hospital.

SYSTEM ALERT: Wire transfer of $450,000 MXN initiated from Account ending in #4092 (Capital Reserve) to "Mena & Asociados Legal Consulting." Authorized by: Rebeca Solís (Interim Administrative Trustee) and Dr. Esteban Mena (Co-Signatory).

Julián’s eyes narrowed. His thumb hovered over the screen, sliding open a secure enterprise application that most hospital board members didn't even know existed. It was a proprietary ledger system he had commissioned back in 2012 when the hospital was nothing more than a leaky roof and two broken X-ray machines.

"You're awake," a quiet voice whispered from the darkness of the doorway.

Clara Mendoza stepped inside, checking the saline drip with practiced efficiency. Her face was illuminated by the pale blue glow of the medical monitors. "The charge nurse said your heart rate spiked. If you pop your sutures because your greedy ex-wife is draining your bank accounts, I am personally going to revive you just to yell at you."

"Clara," Julián rasped, his voice dry as sandpaper. "Do you know what Esteban did while I was unconscious?"

"I heard the rumors in the breakroom," Clara replied, her tone dropping to a sharp, protective whisper. "The nurses' station is buzzing. Dr. Mena walked into the administrative wing this morning wearing an executive suit like he already owned the place. He brought in an IT team from outside and locked the server room on the third floor. They're trying to wipe the access logs."

Julián didn't panic. Instead, a cold, calculated calm settled over him—the same composure he had maintained years ago when he stood in front of ruthless bank executives begging for emergency loans to keep the doors open.

"They think they locked the server room," Julián murmured, typing a quick sequence into his phone. "Esteban is a brilliant surgeon, Clara. But he always suffered from a fatal flaw: he thinks computers only have one door."

He tapped a secure terminal icon. A green checkmark flashed on his screen.

ROOT ACCESS ESTABLISHED. LOCAL NODE: BACKUP SERVER (OFF-SITE / CLOUD REPOSITORY) STATUS: SYNCHRONIZED.

"What are you doing?" Clara asked, leaning closer, her eyes reflecting the glowing text.

"I’m watching them pack their bags," Julián said softly. "Esteban thinks changing the administrative passwords on the third floor locks me out of Santa Lucía. He doesn't know that every single byte of financial data, every shadow payroll, every kickback receipt, and every illicit prescription log on this campus has been mirroring directly to an encrypted server in Zurich since the day we broke ground."

He paused, his gaze hardening. "Rebeca wanted half the hospital. Esteban wanted my position, my title, and my life's work. By sunrise, they are going to find out that they don't even own the clothes on their backs."
