Chapter 4 - THE WEB OF DECEIT UNRAVELSThe silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the hum of the air conditioning vent overhead.

Esteban snatched the document off the table. His eyes scanned the lines of legal jargon, his face rapidly draining of color until he looked as pale as a corpse.

"This... this is impossible," Esteban stammered, his voice cracking slightly. "The transfer to Mena & Asociados... it was authorized under the emergency administrative protocol! It was legal!"

"Authorized by an interim administrative trustee who had no legal standing yet, and signed by a deputy medical director who was systematically altering patient triage logs to manufacture fake medical emergencies," a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

Standing in the doorway, leaning slightly on an IV pole but standing completely upright, was Julián Robles.

He wore a dark wool overcoat over his hospital trousers. His face was pale, and a faint line of white surgical tape peeked out from beneath his collar, but his eyes burned with an icy, terrifying clarity. Flanking him were Clara Mendoza and two hospital security guards who looked like they had been waiting all their lives for this exact moment.

"Julián?!" Rebeca shrieked, jumping out of her chair. "What are you doing out of the ICU? You're supposed to be—you're medically incompetent!"

"Incompetent enough to watch you sign your own confessions, apparently," Julián said, walking slowly into the room, his footsteps echoing on the polished wood floor. He stopped right beside Esteban, looking down at the younger doctor with utter disdain.

"Esteban," Julián said quietly. "Do you remember the night of March 14th? The night patient Ignacio Silva came in with acute appendicitis?"

Esteban swallowed hard, his throat tightening. "What... what does that have to do with anything?"

"Everything," Julián answered. He pulled his phone from his coat pocket and tapped the screen. A crisp audio recording began playing through the boardroom's high-end surround sound speakers.

"Esteban, the lab results show a severe infection, we need to prep him for immediate surgery," a junior resident's voice said on the audio. "Ignore the lab results," Esteban's recorded voice snapped back. "Mark it as a routine gastric infection and send him home. We need to free up Bed 4 for the VIP cardiac patient from the Mendoza family. And shred the original intake form."

Rebeca gasped, staring at Esteban in sheer horror. "Esteban... what is that?"

"It’s called medical negligence leading to systemic fraud," Julián explained smoothly, turning his gaze back to his ex-wife. "Esteban didn't just help you draft divorce papers, Rebeca. He needed control of this hospital because an independent internal audit revealed that he had been systematically siphoning off pharmaceutical procurement funds for the past two years to fund his lavish lifestyle in Mexico City. And you, my dear... were his convenient signature."
