Chapter 3 - The Audit of a Monster“Grant, please, let me explain,” Vivian stammered, backing up until her designer heels clicked desperately against the baseboard. “The girl was disrespectful! She undermined my authority! You know how difficult it is to manage this household—”

“Management?” Grant cut her off, his voice dangerously soft. “Is that what you call starving my children, locking them away, and striking them when my back is turned?”
“I never—!” Vivian shrieked, her face turning pale. “She’s lying! The housekeeper is lying to save her job!”
Grant didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t yell. He pulled a sleek, encrypted smartphone from his pocket, tapped the screen twice, and hit play.
Instantly, clear, high-definition audio filled the grand foyer.
“If you make me look bad, I will send that maid away.” “You’re lucky your father is too busy to notice.” “No one likes difficult little girls.”
Vivian’s color drained entirely. She looked like she had just seen a ghost. “Where… how did you…?”
“Security cameras, Vivian,” Grant said coldly, pocketing the phone. “Did you really think I didn’t install private feeds in every room of this house? I built a security empire. I wanted to make sure my children were safe while I was out protecting our assets. I just foolishly trusted that the woman I married wouldn't become the primary threat inside my own walls.”
“Grant! Listen to me, I can change, we can fix this—!”
“Pack your things,” Grant interrupted, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. “You have twenty minutes. If you are still in this house when the clock runs out, my legal team won't just serve you divorce papers; they will hand you indictments for child abuse, extortion, and financial embezzlement from the Calloway Foundation. Choose wisely.”
Vivian stared at him, realizing in that single heartbeat that the man she had manipulated for three years was a predator who had just decided to cage her. Without another word, she turned and sprinted up the grand staircase in her heels.
Grant watched her go. Then, slowly, he turned back to me and his children.
He knelt down on one knee, bringing himself down to Lily and Noah’s eye level. For the first time, the cold, untouchable billionaire melted into a heartbroken father.
He reached out, his large, calloused hands gently resting on Lily’s shoulders. “I’m sorry, my loves,” he choked out, his voice thick with unspooled grief. “Daddy was blind. But I’m here now. No one will ever hurt you again.”
Lily looked up at her father, tears in her eyes, then looked back at me. She reached out and grabbed my hand, pulling me down with them.
“Only if Nora stays,” Lily whispered fiercely. “Promise, Daddy. Nora stays.”
Grant looked up at me, his gray eyes searching my face, filled with a raw, desperate plea.
“Nora Lane,” Grant Calloway said, his voice dropping into something deeply personal, rich with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat. “You saved my children. Name your price. Stay, and name whatever you want.”
I looked at the two little kids who finally looked safe for the first time in months, and then up at the most powerful, dangerous man in Chicago.
“I don’t want money, Mr. Calloway,” I said softly, standing my ground. “I want a contract. A guarantee that these children will never be left unprotected again.”

A slow, dark, appreciative smile touched the corners of Grant’s lips.
“Done,” he murmured, standing up and holding out his hand. “And starting tomorrow, Nora… things in this house are going to be very, very different.”
