Chapter 9 - The Siege of Lake Forest“Intruders! Perimeter breach at the west gate!” a frantic voice barked over the encrypted security intercom mounted on the dining room wall.

Grant’s entire demeanor shifted in a millisecond. The vulnerable, heartbroken father vanished, replaced instantly by the ruthless billionaire warlord who owned private security firms and controlled half of Chicago.
He pulled a heavy, matte-black firearm from a concealed holster beneath his suit jacket, checking the magazine with practiced speed.
“Nora, take Lily and Noah down to the panic room in the basement immediately,” Grant ordered, his voice commanding and absolute. “Do not open the door for anyone except me.”
“Grant, what’s happening? Who is out there?” I asked, my heart pounding in my throat.
“Richard Vance didn't go bankrupt quietly,” Grant said darkly, sliding his phone into his pocket as he dialed his tactical response team. “He hired international mercenaries to finish what his family started. They think they can take my home while my defenses are distracted.”
“I’m not leaving you here alone,” I declared stubbornly.
“Nora, listen to me!” Grant snapped, grabbing my shoulders and looking directly into my eyes with fierce, desperate intensity. “My life is forfeit if anything happens to my children or you. Get them to safety. Now.”
Without waiting another second, I sprinted toward the sunroom, scooping up five-year-old Noah into my arms while holding seven-year-old Lily’s hand tightly. We flew down the secret staircase hidden behind the library bookshelf, locking ourselves inside the high-tech steel-reinforced panic room just as the sound of shattering glass and heavy gunfire echoed through the mansion above.
Through the high-definition security monitors embedded in the panic room wall, I watched a nightmare unfold.
Six masked mercenaries in tactical gear swarmed the grand foyer, overwhelming two of our security guards. Leading them wasn't Richard Vance—it was a dangerous underworld broker known as Viktor Vance, Richard and Vivian’s uncle, a man wanted by Interpol for arms trafficking.
“Grant Calloway! Come out and face music!” Viktor roared into the living room cameras, holding a heavy assault rifle. “You ruined my family! Today, I take everything you love!”

On another camera feed, I watched Grant step out onto the second-floor landing alone.
He didn't look scared. He looked like an avenging angel.
