Ava screamed, grabbing the twins and diving for the panic room hidden behind the master suite’s bookshelf. The penthouse turned into a war zone. She heard the exchange of gunfire, the shouting, and the sickening thud of bodies hitting the floor.
She was trapped. The digital keypad for the panic room flickered and died. She was huddled in the dark, the twins crying in her arms, when the door to the bedroom was kicked open. A man stepped in, his face obscured by a tactical mask. He wasn't a guard. He was a professional assassin. He raised his suppressed pistol, searching for the movement of the bookshelf. Ava held her breath, tears streaming down her face, knowing that this was the end.
