CHAPTER 1: The Dog Who Refused to Let Me Enter

The walk had been completely ordinary.
It was one of those quiet autumn evenings when the streets seemed frozen in time. The air was cool, the neighborhood peaceful, and my German Shepherd, Max, walked calmly beside me.
For seven years, Max had been the most predictable creature in my life.
He was loyal.
Protective.
Smart.
But never irrational.
That was why what happened outside my apartment terrified me so much afterward.
The moment we reached my front door, everything changed.
As I searched my pocket for my keys, Max suddenly froze.
His entire body became rigid.
His ears shot forward.
A low growl rumbled from deep inside his chest.
I looked around.
The hallway was empty.
Nothing moved.
Nothing seemed wrong.
"It's okay, buddy," I said, scratching behind his ears.
But he didn't react.
He kept staring at the door.
Then he began whining.
Not the playful kind.
Not the impatient kind.
This was different.
Desperate.
Almost frightened.
When I pulled out my keys, Max suddenly jumped forward and knocked my hand aside.
The keys flew from my fingers.
I stared at him in disbelief.
"What is wrong with you?"
He barked.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Sharp.
Urgent.
Then he stood directly in front of the door.
Blocking it.
Refusing to move.
For several seconds we stood there facing each other.
Me trying to get inside.
Him doing everything possible to stop me.
He grabbed my coat sleeve with his teeth.
Pulled backward.
Pressed his body against my legs.
Whined again.
His eyes looked wild.
Panicked.
As if he was trying to tell me something.
But I was exhausted.
Cold.
Annoyed.
I assumed he was acting crazy for no reason.
"Move, Max!"
I pushed him aside.
Harder than I ever had before.
The hurt look in his eyes lasted only a second before he rushed back in front of me.
Then he began barking in a way I had never heard.
Not angry.
Not protective.
Terrified.
Still, I ignored him.
I unlocked the door.
Turned the handle.
And stepped inside.
The smell hit me first.
A strange chemical odor.
Sharp.
Burning.
Wrong.
Then I heard it.
A faint ticking sound.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Coming from somewhere inside my apartment.
My blood ran cold.
Behind me, Max exploded into frantic barking.

And for the first time that night...
I realized he had been trying to save my life.
