Chapter 1 - The Cold Red Gleam

The heavy silence of the third-floor nursery felt suffocating. Marco’s warning hung in the air like a physical blow: Boss... don’t touch anything.
I stood up slowly, the air freezing in my lungs. My shadow cast a long, jagged silhouette across the mahogany floorboards as I stepped past Sophie, who was still clutching her button-eyed doll and retreating toward her mother.
“Marco,” I said, my voice dropping into the low, lethal register that usually made grown men tremble. “Talk to me.”
Marco didn’t move. He crouched on the balls of his feet, his tactical flashlight illuminating the dark interior of the ventilation shaft behind the torn-away grille. The two tiny red lights blinked in rhythmic succession—once every three seconds.
“It’s a micro-transmiter, boss,” Marco whispered, his gloved hand hovering inches from the device. “Not just audio. High-frequency ultrasonic emission. It pulses at a sub-audible pitch. Human adults can’t hear it, but... infants.”
“An ultrasonic frequency?” Dr. Gable stepped forward, his face pale. “Infant auditory nerves are far more sensitive than ours. A continuous sub-audible pulse at that amplitude wouldn't just be annoying—it would cause inner ear trauma, disorientation, and sheer terror. That’s why they stop crying the second they leave the room.”
My blood turned to ice water. Someone hadn't just breached my estate; they had weaponized the nursery against my eight-month-old children.
“Trace it,” I ordered, turning to my lead cyber-security specialist, who had just hurried into the hallway. “Find out where that signal is broadcasting.”
“Already on it, Mr. Moretti,” the tech panted, slamming a portable decoder pad onto the changing table. “Give me thirty seconds.”
May you like
Thirty seconds in the empire I built felt like a lifetime. I looked down at Theo, Miles, and Nora, who were still whimpering in the arms of the nannies outside in the hallway. My children. My flesh and blood. Protected by steel gates, biometric sensors, and an army of mercenaries, yet someone had managed to plant a psychological torture device right underneath their cribs.
“Got it,” the tech whispered, his eyes widening as lines of green data scrolled across his screen. “The signal isn't external. It’s bouncing off a localized relay repeater. Boss... the repeater is located inside the master wing. Inside your private study.”
