Chapter 2 - THE SECRETS IN THE SHADOWS

“The Maid Knows Too Much—And the Syndicate Wants Her Head on a Silver Platter.”Forty-eight hours later, the blizzard had passed, leaving New York State under a deceptively beautiful blanket of white. But inside a hidden, soundproofed basement apartment in Brooklyn, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Dominic lay on a mattress, hooked up to an IV line that Sarah had stolen from a crooked 24-hour veterinary clinic. She had spent the last two days operating on him with utility blades, sewing needles, and sheer willpower. She hadn’t slept a single wink. Her eyes were bloodshot, her face pale.
Dominic woke up, his fever finally breaking. He looked around the dim, concrete-walled room, then at Sarah, who was sitting on a wooden chair, quietly cleaning her blood-stained uniform in a plastic bucket.
“Where are we?” Dominic asked, his voice stronger now.
“My mother’s old apartment,” Sarah said without looking up. “The landlord thinks I’m still at the estate. Nobody comes here. My mother is… in a long-term care facility uptown. The bills are paid through next week. After that, they kick her out.”
Dominic sat up slowly, wincing as the stitches pulled against his flesh. He looked at the fragile woman who had single-handedly kept him from the grave. “You saved my life twice, Sarah. The Rossis don’t forget their debts. When I take back my family’s throne, you will never have to worry about a bill again.”
“I don’t want your mafia money, Dominic,” Sarah said, her voice dripping with sudden, bitter venom. She stood up, walking over to him. “I want my life back. But I can’t have it, because your Uncle Lorenzo has put a five-million-dollar bounty on anyone matching my description. I saw the news. They’re calling me an accomplice to your ‘disappearance.’”
Dominic’s face darkened. He reached for a burner phone on the nightstand, scrolling through coded underworld forums. It was true. Lorenzo had seized control of the Rossi shipping empire, claiming Dominic and his father Carmine had been assassinated by a rival cartel. Lorenzo was currently consolidating power, purging anyone loyal to the old regime.
“He thinks he won,” Dominic growled, his knuckles turning white. “But he made one critical error. He left the ledger in the safe at the Manhattan penthouse. That ledger contains the digital keys to every offshore account, every bribe, every route. Without it, Lorenzo can’t pay the capos. He’s running on borrowed time.”
“Then go get it,” Sarah said coldly.
“I can’t,” Dominic said, looking her dead in the eye. “The penthouse is locked down with biometric scanners. Facial recognition, palm prints. Lorenzo changed the main codes, but the old servant bypass—the one used for midnight catering and heavy cleaning—is still active on the old maintenance network. A network only accessible from inside the building's basement utility room.”
Sarah stepped back, her breath catching. “No. No way. You want me to go back in there?”
“You are invisible, Sarah. To them, you’re just a maid who got lucky in the storm. They think you’re running for the border,” Dominic said, his voice dropping to a seductive, dangerous whisper. “But if you go in, you can download the ledger data. Help me destroy Lorenzo, and I will cure your mother. I will buy the hospital she’s dying in.”
Sarah stared at him. The temptation was a poisonous blade. She was a simple girl caught in a war of monsters. But as she thought of her mother’s fading smile, her jaw hardened.

“If I do this,” Sarah whispered, “we do it my way. No more lying.”
Dominic smiled—a predatory, lethal smirk. “Deal.”
