Chapter 5 - THE PRICE OF SACRIFICE

“A Bullet in the Dark and a Deal with the Devil.”Seeing his empire crumble in a single heartbeat, Lorenzo went completely insane. “If I lose everything, you lose her!” he shrieked, pulling the trigger aimed at Sarah’s head.
In that microsecond, Sarah didn’t rely on nursing or maid skills. She relied on the survival instinct that had kept her alive in the blizzard. She violently threw her head backward, slamming her skull into Lorenzo’s nose.
BANG!
The bullet grazed her cheek, shattering a crystal chandelier above. Lorenzo stumbled back, clutching his bleeding face.
Dominic didn’t hesitate. He raised his weapon and fired two precise rounds into Lorenzo’s chest. The man who had orchestrated the downfall of the Rossi family fell backward, crashing through the glass balcony doors, tumbling forty stories down into the New York night.
The ballroom was silent.
Dominic rushed forward, dropping his weapon and catching Sarah as her knees buckled. He pulled her into his chest, holding her tight. “I’ve got you. I’ve got you, Sarah. It’s over.”
Sarah gasped for air, her body shaking uncontrollably. She looked around at the sea of hardened criminals, gangsters, and killers who were now bowing their heads to Dominic. He was the undisputed King of the city now.
An hour later, the bodies were cleared, and the penthouse was locked down. Dominic sat in his father’s leather armchair, a glass of scotch in hand. A private physician was treating Sarah’s grazed cheek in the corner.
“The ledger is secure,” Dominic said softly, looking at her. “My family’s assets are unfrozen. As promised, your mother has been moved to the private wing of Presbyterian Hospital. The best doctors in the world are flying in tonight. Her medical debt is erased.”
Sarah stood up, pushing the doctor away. She walked over to the massive floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the glowing skyline. “So I get to go back to my life? I get to be normal again?”
Dominic stood up, walking up behind her, his presence heavy and suffocating. “Normal? Sarah, you killed a tactical operative in a blizzard. You infiltrated a high-security penthouse. You stood before a room of executioners and didn’t blink. You aren’t a maid anymore. You never will be.”
Sarah felt a cold shiver run down her spine. He was right. The darkness of the underworld had stained her skin, and no amount of soap or polish could ever wash it clean.
“What do you want from me, Dominic?” she whispered.

“I need a shadow,” Dominic said, leaning close to her ear. “Someone the world doesn’t see. Someone who knows how to clean up messes. Stay by my side. Run this empire with me.”
Sarah closed her eyes. She had saved a monster. And now, the monster wanted her to be his queen.
