Chapter 3 - THE PRICE OF SILENCEThe silence in the Grand Ballroom was so absolute that the distant hum of traffic outside on the boulevard felt like a phantom heartbeat.

Regina Alcocer stopped just inches away from Mariana. The smell of expensive French perfume mingled aggressively with the sharp, acidic scent of spilled red wine. Regina looked Mariana up and down with undisguised contempt, her gaze lingering mockingly on the cheap, worn-out black shoes and the simple, sweat-stained catering vest.

"Look at you," Regina whispered, loud enough for the front rows of the elite audience to hear. "You’re barely old enough to vote, yet you’re already sticking your nose where it doesn't belong. Do you have any idea who I am, little girl? My husband could have your boss fired, blacklisted, and stripped of his license before you can even wipe that stain off the floor."

Mariana’s breath hitched. She thought of Toñito lying on his thin mattress at home, struggling for every single breath. She thought of the crumpled, pathetic handful of pesos in her purse—the money she desperately needed for his life-saving prescription. If she lost this job, if she was thrown out into the rain tonight with zero pay, Toñito wouldn't make it through the week.

Fear, cold and paralyzing, coiled tightly around Mariana’s stomach. She forced her eyes downward, blinking back hot tears of humiliation.

"I... I apologize, Señora," Mariana murmured, her voice shaking violently as she stared at the polished marble floor. "I didn't mean to interfere. Please... forgive me."

A ripple of smug, arrogant laughter echoed through the surrounding crowd. The socialites exchanged pleased glances, satisfied that the natural order of the universe had been swiftly and ruthlessly restored. The rich remained powerful, and the poor learned their lesson.

"Good girl," Regina sneered, raising her chin with haughty triumph. "Now, get out of my sight. And take this pathetic old beggar out the back service exit with you. I don't want either of you ruining the rest of my night."

The two heavy-set security guards immediately tightened their grip on the elderly woman. One of them roughly shoved Mariana’s shoulder, sending her staggering backward. The heavy silver tray tilted, sliding dangerously across her forearm, but she managed to catch it before the remaining canapés crashed to the floor.

As the guards began dragging the weeping old woman toward the discreet, heavy velvet curtains of the service hallway, something inside Mariana snapped.

It wasn't a sudden burst of bravery; it was a profound, scorching realization of utter exhaustion. She had spent her entire life bowing, scraping, apologizing, and taking abuse just to survive crumbs while these people wallowed in infinite excess. And for what? To watch an innocent, terrified grandmother humiliated and manhandled for a spilled drink?

No. Not tonight.

"Stop," Mariana said.

Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried an eerie, razor-sharp clarity that cut straight through the murmurs of the crowd.

The security guards paused, turning back with scowls of disbelief. Regina froze mid-turn, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits.

Mariana slowly raised her head. All the trembling fear was gone from her eyes, replaced by a cold, unwavering defiance that made even the most powerful senator in the room shift uncomfortably in his shoes.

"Let her go," Mariana demanded, her voice ringing clear and strong across the cavernous ballroom. "She apologized. She said she was dizzy. You have insurance, you have a closet full of dresses that cost more than my entire family will earn in a lifetime, and yet you treat a human being like stray trash over a drop of wine. Have you no shame at all?"

Regina’s face flushed a deep, mottled purple. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, utterly paralyzed by the sheer audacity of a lowly catering server talking back to her in public.

"You... you insolent little bitch!" Regina shrieked, lunging forward as if she intended to scratch Mariana’s eyes out. "Security! Throw her out! Throw them both out into the street right now!"

Before the guards could take a single step forward, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the Grand Ballroom suddenly swung wide open.

A sharp, authoritative voice boomed across the room, freezing everyone in their tracks.

"Touch her, and I will personally ensure every single person in this room loses everything they own before the sun rises tomorrow."
