Chapter 6 - THE GHOST IN THE SYSTEMTwo months passed before the fragile peace of the Blackwell estate was rattled by a digital ghost.

Kate sat behind a massive mahogany desk in the executive wing of the Blackwell corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan. As Damon’s newly appointed Chief of Staff, she had transformed from a terrified maid hiding in a storage room into an iron-willed executive who managed the intricate web of legitimate businesses, shell companies, and high-level security contracts that sustained the Blackwell empire.
Her phone buzzed on the wireless charging pad. It was an encrypted ping from the estate’s IT firewall—an automated alert signaling an unauthorized brute-force intrusion attempt.
Warning: External node probing secure mainframe. Origin: Unknown IP routing via Zurich.
Kate’s fingers flew across her mechanical keyboard. Her eyes narrowed as she watched lines of complex firewall code execute in real-time, tracing the digital footprint backward through multiple encrypted proxy layers. Someone was trying to access the restricted archives—specifically, the encrypted security footage and financial ledger entries related to the disappearance of Senator Caldwell’s son and the fifteen men who vanished on the night of the gala.
"Matteo," she spoke into her desk intercom. "Get to the server room on floor forty-two. We have a digital breach."
Within thirty seconds, Matteo’s gruff voice crackled back through the speaker. "Already here, boss lady. The physical port is locked down, but the terminal is actively pulling data packets. Somebody on the inside or a very good remote ghost is trying to suck our files."
"Don't cut the connection," Kate commanded, her voice ice-cold. "Let them pull. Feed them a honeypot file."
"A honeypot?" Matteo chuckled on the other end. "You want to invite them in?"
"If someone is looking for ghosts, let's give them a haunting," Kate said. She executed a rapid sequence of commands, routing a simulated, highly classified database containing fake transaction logs and fabricated surveillance clips directly into the intruder’s extraction pipe—while simultaneously tracking the hacker’s true physical signal back to its source.
The trace pinged across the Atlantic, bounced through a satellite relay, and landed dead-center on a luxury yacht anchored off the coast of Monaco.
The owner of the yacht?
Viktor Vance.
A notoriously ruthless Russian arms dealer and long-standing rival of Damon Blackwell who had been quiet for over five years.
The door to Kate’s office swung open. Damon walked in, wearing his signature black tailored suit, holding a tablet displaying the exact same trace telemetry Kate was looking at.
"Viktor is getting ambitious," Damon remarked calmly, tossing his tablet onto her desk. "He thinks because Caldwell fell, there’s a vacuum in the regional syndicate. He wants to know what happened to his favorite American political asset."
"He doesn't just want to know," Kate said, standing up from her desk, her carbon-fiber cast long since removed, replaced by a subtle leather wrist wrap. "He wants leverage. He thinks he can blackmail you into handing over our European logistics routes."

Damon looked at her, a dark, dangerous smile playing on his lips. "And what do you suggest we do, Chief of Staff? Send flowers?"
"No," Kate said, her eyes flashing with a cold, calculated brilliance. "We send an invitation."
