Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth in the Dark

Joseph reached out, his hand trembling as his fingers brushed his mother’s frail, cold wrist. Up close, under the dim accent lights of the sub-zero refrigerator, Evelyn looked like a ghost inhabiting her own skin. Her sunken cheeks and bruised eyelids told a story far different from the reports he received during his board meetings.
“Mom,” Joseph repeated, his voice cracking, swallowing down the sudden surge of nausea. “Why are you eating out of the trash? Look at me. Please.”
Evelyn didn’t look at him. Her gaze remained darting toward the silent, carpeted hallway leading to the grand staircase. “She said... she said if I asked the staff for fresh food, I’d be taking away from your future,” Evelyn whispered, her chin quivering. “She said you were on the brink of losing everything because of my care bills. She said... Sloane said you were broke.”
Joseph felt as though someone had struck him with an iron bar. Broke? He had just closed a $400 million development project in Miami three days ago.
“Why didn’t you come to me?” Joseph asked, gentle tear tracks cutting through his manicured facade.
“She told me you were too stressed,” Evelyn sobbed softly, hiding the soggy piece of paper plate. “She locked the pantry, Joseph. She fired Mary—the nurse who cared for me—three months ago! She told you Mary quit to move back to Poland, but Sloane threatened her with ICE. Sloane gives me one meal a day at 5:00 p.m. If I ask for more, she cuts off my medication or turns off the heat in my wing.”
A wave of icy fury washed over Joseph, so intense it rendered him momentarily paralyzed. The heated floors of the Winnetka mansion felt like burning coals beneath his bare feet.
“And the name, Mom?” Joseph whispered, holding her hand tightly. “You said, ‘Don’t tell Sloane.’ Is there someone else?”
Evelyn leaned in, her body shivering violently despite the ambient warmth. “It’s not just her. I heard them in the study last week when you were in Tokyo. She’s meeting a man. A man who calls her 'darling'. He has a scar on his left temple. He said... he said the trust funds are almost empty. They’re transferring the final assets to an offshore shell account in the Cayman Islands under a company named Vanguard Crest. They’re poisoning you, Joseph. The green tea she makes you every night... don't drink it.”

Before Joseph could process the weight of her words, a soft chime rang from the top of the stairs, followed by the slow, rhythmic click of designer heels descending the marble staircase.
Sloane was coming down.
