Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Sloane stumbled back, dropping her glass of Scotch. It shattered against the floorboards. “Joseph... you... how?”

“Did you really think I built a three-billion-dollar enterprise by being blind?” Joseph stepped forward, his massive frame towering over Marcus. “You thought I was absent because I was stupid. I was absent because I was working to protect the people I love. But you... you mistook my patience for weakness.”

Marcus pulled a concealed 9mm pistol from his jacket and aimed it directly at Joseph’s chest. “Stand down, Calloway! It doesn’t matter what you know! You’re locked in here with us. My men will gut you and we’ll burn this place to the ground!”

Joseph didn’t even flinch. He didn’t look at the gun.

“Check your phone, Marcus,” Joseph said softly.

Marcus hesitated, eyeing Joseph before pulling out his phone with his left hand.

The screen was flooded with red alert notifications. His offshore accounts in Grand Cayman, Zürich, and Liechtenstein were rapidly displaying balance updates: $0.00.

“What did you do? WHAT DID YOU DO?!” Marcus screamed, his composure shattering as he stared at the screen.

“I didn’t do anything,” Joseph replied, taking a slow step toward the gun. “Julian did. While you were busy setting up your little execution squad in my study, my team executed a global asset freeze through the Department of Justice and the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority. Every penny you stole from my mother’s care fund, every dollar you siphoned from Calloway Developments... gone.”

“You bastard!” Marcus cocked the gun.

BANG!

A gunshot echoed through the room—but it didn’t come from Marcus’s weapon.

The heavy oak doors of the study were blown off their hinges by a high-pressure breaching charge. A tactical team dressed in FBI uniforms flooded the room, red laser sights illuminating Marcus and his two henchmen.

“FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND NOW!”

Marcus was tackled to the floor before he could pull the trigger, his face smashed into the glass-covered floor. Sloane shrieked as female federal agents seized her arms, slamming her against the mahogany desk she had planned to inherit.
