Chapter 2 - THE FEDERAL AMBUSH

The air in the courtroom shattered. Two men and a woman in crisp, charcoal-grey suits pushed past the double doors. The leader, a tall man with a silver crewcut and an FBI badge clipped to his belt, marched straight down the aisle toward the bench.
"Judge Calder," the agent announced, his voice like iron. "I am Special Agent Marcus Vance with the Financial Crimes Division of the Department of Justice. We are serving a federal arrest warrant for Clara Lane."
A collective murmur ripped through the spectators.
Adrian, who had been sitting frozen in utter defeat just seconds ago, suddenly breathed in deeply. The ghostly pale look on his face vanished, replaced by an ugly, triumphant sneer. He looked at his lead attorney, Russell Crane, who gave him a subtle, knowing nod.
They knew, I realized instantly. This wasn't a coincidence. This was their backup plan.
"On what grounds, Agent Vance?" Judge Calder demanded, his brows furrowed in deep annoyance. "We are in the middle of a high-stakes custody and asset emergency hearing."
"On the grounds of wire fraud, grand larceny, and the illegal transfer of classified municipal transit data to foreign entities," Agent Vance stated clearly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his coat. "Over sixty million dollars were funneled out of Hollis Transit's offshore accounts into an unmonitored account in the Cayman Islands over the last forty-eight hours. The digital footprint points directly to Mrs. Lane’s personal IP address."
My heart hammered against my ribs, but I kept my posture straight. Samuel and Owen squeezed each other's hands from the gallery seat, their tiny eyes wide with sheer terror.
"Mommy?" Samuel cried out, his voice trembling. "What's happening?"
"Stay with the officer, sweetie," I said softly, turning to give them a comforting smile. "Mommy is fine. Everything is going to be okay."
"She’s a criminal, Your Honor!" Crane shouted, jumping back into action like a vulture sensing fresh blood. "She set up this entire company ambush to cover up her massive financial treason! She’s planning to flee the country with the children! We demand immediate, sole physical custody of Samuel and Owen be granted to their father, Adrian Hollis, right now for their own safety!"
Adrian stood up, putting on his best act as a heartbroken, protective father. "Your Honor, please. Look at her! She’s been living a double life! I had no idea she was doing this behind my back. My boys aren't safe with a federal fugitive!"
Judge Calder slammed his gavel. "Quiet! Mrs. Lane, do you have legal counsel present to address these federal charges?"
I took a slow, deep breath. I looked at Adrian. I looked at Crane. Then I looked at Agent Vance.
"I don't need a lawyer for this, Your Honor," I said calmly. "Because Agent Vance is holding a forged warrant."
Agent Vance’s eyes narrowed. "Excuse me? This is signed by a Federal District Magistrate—"
"It’s signed by Magistrate Arthur Vance," I interrupted, stepping right up to the agent. "Your older brother. Who, according to public tax records from three years ago, received a two-hundred-thousand-dollar 'consulting fee' from a shell company called Apex Holdings—a subsidiary owned entirely by Adrian Hollis’s family trust."
The courtroom went dead silent.
Agent Vance’s jaw twitched. He shifted his weight, a flicker of panic darting across his eyes.
"Furthermore," I continued, pulling my laptop out of my leather bag and flipping it open, connecting it directly to the courtroom’s digital display screen with an HDMI cable. "The sixty million dollars wasn't stolen. It was transferred this morning at 8:00 AM by an executive override code. A code that belongs exclusively to the company’s CFO."
The large screen behind the judge’s bench flashed to life. A crystal-clear high-definition security video played.
It showed Adrian Hollis sitting in his private office late last night, logging into the corporate server using a master key hardware drive provided to him by Paige Ellison. The camera zoomed in on his screen, clearly capturing his finger pressing the confirm button to transfer sixty million dollars into an offshore Cayman account titled Apex Holdings.
Adrian’s mouth fell open. He grabbed the edge of the table, his knuckles turning stark white.
"You framed yourself, Adrian," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a silver blade. "You knew I owned the primary shares. You knew the divorce would ruin you. So you tried to drain the company dry last night, plant the digital breadcrumbs on my home router, and have your bought-and-paid-for federal agent friend arrest me right here in court so you could claim emergency guardianship of the children—and by extension, control of my corporate estate."
"That's fake!" Adrian screamed, losing all composure. "That video is an AI deepfake! Your Honor, she's manipulating the evidence!"
"The digital signature on that block-chain transfer is verified by the Department of the Treasury," I replied smoothly, tapping a key on my laptop. A live audit document popped up on the screen, bearing the golden seal of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division. "In fact, I alerted the real Federal Task Force three weeks ago. They’ve been monitoring every keystroke you made."
The heavy rear doors of the courtroom burst open a second time.
This time, six actual federal marshals in tactical vests marched in, led by a stern woman in a dark blue trench coat.
"Adrian Hollis? Russell Crane?" the woman announced. "I'm Special Agent Sarah Sterling, IRS Criminal Investigation. You are both under arrest for conspiracy, bank fraud, tax evasion, and bribing a public official."

The entire courtroom erupted into absolute chaos.
[HOOK FOR NEXT CHAP] As the marshals pinned Adrian to the floor and slapped cuffs on his wrists, he turned to me with bloodshot, psychotic eyes and whispered a sentence that made my blood run cold: "You think you won, Clara? Check the twins' bloodlines. They aren't yours."
