Chapter 3 - THE BLOODLINE BOMBSHELL

The sound of metal handcuffs clicking closed around Adrian’s wrists echoed above the roar of the panicked spectators. The news reporters who had snuck into the back row were frantically snapping pictures, flashes blinding the once-revered titan of industry as he was forced to his knees.

I stood completely still, my heart dropping into a dark, bottomless pit.

“You think you won, Clara? Check the twins’ bloodlines. They aren't yours.”

His words spun in my head, loud and deafening. I looked back at Samuel and Owen. They were sitting quietly in the second row, clutching each other, their big brown eyes filled with confusion and fear.

Not mine? How could they not be mine? I had carried them for nine painful, high-risk months. I had endured thirty-six hours of agonizing labor at St. Jude’s Private Hospital eight years ago. I remembered holding their tiny, fragile bodies against my chest in the delivery room, weeping tears of pure joy.

Was Adrian bluffing? Was this just the desperate, dying strike of a cornered beast trying to tear my soul apart before he was dragged off to prison?

"Get him out of here," Agent Sterling ordered, pulling Adrian up by his collar.

As he was dragged down the center aisle, Adrian didn't look broken anymore. He had a twisted, demonic grin stretched across his face. He locked eyes with me one last time and mouthed three words: Test their DNA.

"Mrs. Lane?" Judge Calder’s voice snapped me back to reality. The room had cleared out significantly. Russell Crane was also in cuffs, being led away by federal agents for his role in the money laundering scheme.

"Yes, Your Honor?" I stammered, my hands trembling as I shut my laptop.

"In light of these extraordinary criminal developments," Judge Calder said, his expression filled with deep sympathy, "this court grants you full, exclusive legal and physical custody of Samuel and Owen Hollis, effective immediately. Mr. Hollis’s parental rights are suspended pending his federal trial. A total restraining order is hereby issued."

"Thank you, Your Honor," I whispered.

I walked over to my boys, dropped to my knees, and wrapped my arms around them as tightly as I could. They squeezed my neck, burying their faces in my shoulders.

"Is Daddy going to jail?" Owen whimpered softly.

"Daddy has to answer for some bad things he did, sweetie," I murmured, kissing his forehead. "But you two are safe now. I promise you, nobody is ever going to hurt us again."

But as I held them, a cold, terrifying seed of doubt began to root itself deep in my mind.

Two hours later, we arrived at our estate in Great Falls. The massive iron gates opened, and I drove down the winding driveway. What was once our family home now felt like an empty, haunted fortress.

After feeding the boys dinner and putting them to bed, I couldn't rest. I sat in my home office, staring at the darkened window.

Adrian was a narcissist, a liar, and a thief. But he wasn't stupid. He wouldn't throw out a sentence like that in his final moment of defeat unless he held a card I knew nothing about.

I picked up my phone and dialed a private number.

"Clara?" a calm, raspy voice answered on the second ring. It was Dr. Elizabeth Vance—no relation to the dirty agent—a brilliant private investigator and former forensic pathologist I had hired months ago to dig into Adrian's hidden assets.

"Elizabeth," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "I need you to do something for me. Off the books. Immediately."

"Name it."

"I need a full, high-priority DNA paternity and maternity test for me and the twins. And I need you to pull the archived medical records from St. Jude’s Hospital from eight years ago. The exact night I gave birth."

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. "Clara... what did he say to you?"

"Just do it, Elizabeth. Please."

Thirty-six hours passed in a surreal blur. I spent the time securing the company, meeting with the board of directors at Hollis Transit Systems, and formally taking my seat as Chairman and CEO. The corporate world was stunned. The "quiet homemaker" had executed the most ruthless corporate takeover in state history.

On Saturday morning, while the boys were in the backyard playing soccer, Elizabeth’s car pulled up the driveway.

She walked into my kitchen, carrying a thick yellow Manila folder. She didn't offer a polite smile. She didn't say hello. Her face was grim, her eyes heavy with an overwhelming sorrow.

My stomach churned. "Elizabeth... tell me."

Elizabeth laid the file on the marble kitchen island and opened it.

"The DNA results came back, Clara," she said softly. "Adrian is the biological father of Samuel and Owen. There is a 99.9% match."

I let out a massive sigh of relief, leaning against the counter. "Thank God... thank God. He was just lying to hurt me—"

"Clara, let me finish," Elizabeth interrupted, her voice shaking. She slid a second piece of paper toward me.

May you like

"Adrian is their father. But Clara... you are not their biological mother. Zero percent match. Neither of those boys carries a single strand of your DNA."

[HOOK FOR NEXT CHAP] My knees gave out, and I collapsed onto the cold tile floor. As I sobbed in absolute horror, Elizabeth bent down and whispered the ultimate betraying truth: "Your real biological baby didn't die at birth eight years ago, Clara... Adrian stole her."
