Chapter 7 - THE FINAL SIEGE

My heart stopped. The world around me froze into absolute terror once again.

"What do you mean he escaped?!" I screamed, trying to push past the paramedics who were trying to bandage the deep gash on my forehead.

"The federal transport van was broadsided by an unmarked armored truck two miles from the detention center," Agent Sterling explained rapidly, her face tight with extreme urgency. "It was an insider breakout. Adrian’s father’s old political contacts executed a military-style ambush. Three officers are wounded. Adrian took a tactical shotgun and a vest from the guards."

"Samuel and Owen!" I shrieked, panic clawing at my chest like a feral beast. "My twin boys are at my house with Marcus!"

"We already dispatched state police units to your estate in Great Falls," Sterling said, grabbing her radio. "I'm coming with you. Get in!"

I didn't wait for permission. I grabbed Maya, held her tightly against my chest, and climbed directly into the back of Agent Sterling’s heavily armored FBI SUV. Elizabeth jumped in beside us, pulling out a tablet to monitor the estate's live security camera feeds.

"Connect to my home network!" I barked at Elizabeth, my voice laced with desperate authority. "Now!"

Elizabeth tapped frantically on her screen. The live security feeds from my Great Falls estate popped up in high definition.

What we saw on the screen made my stomach turn into a tight knot.

The front security gates of my estate were torn off. Marcus, my head of security, was lying unconscious on the front lawn, blood pooling near his shoulder.

Inside the main living room, the camera showed Adrian.

He didn't look like the polished, pristine billionaire CEO anymore. His custom suit was torn and stained with dirt, his tie was gone, and his eyes burned with an unhinged, psychopathic fury. He was pacing through the hallway, holding a twelve-gauge pump-action shotgun.

"Clara!" his voice bellowed through the internal security audio feed on the tablet. "I know you're watching me! Bring my money back! Bring my children back! Or I will burn this entire house to the ground with your beloved twin boys inside!"

The feed shifted to the upstairs master bedroom closet.

Eight-year-old Samuel and Owen were huddled together in the dark behind a row of heavy coats, holding a glowing iPad, their tiny faces terrified as they watched their father hunting them through the house.

"Mommy... please come home..." Samuel’s tiny, cracking voice whimpered through the encrypted family messaging app on my phone. "Daddy is mad. He has a gun."

Tears poured down my face, hot and furious.

"I am coming, baby," I typed back as fast as my shaking fingers could manage. "Lock the heavy oak door. Hide behind the steel panic safe. Mommy will be there in five minutes."

I turned to Agent Sterling, who was driving at terrifying speeds down the dark highway, sirens screaming.

"Listen to me, Agent," I said, my voice dropping into a deadly, horrifying calm. "When we get there, your officers are going to surround the perimeter. But I am going inside alone."

"Are you out of your mind?!" Sterling snapped, glancing in the rearview mirror. "He’s armed with a shotgun and he has nothing left to lose! He will kill you on sight!"

"He wants me," I replied, looking down at Maya, who was holding my hand tightly. "He built his entire empire on the belief that I was a weak, helpless, compliant victim. He thinks he can bully me one last time. If SWAT breaches that house with flashbangs, he will pull that trigger and kill those boys out of sheer spite."

I pulled a small black velvet box out of my leather bag—the box I had retrieved from the company vault earlier that morning. Inside sat the original, high-frequency master override remote for the entire Smart-Home defense system I had secretly installed in the estate three years ago using company funds.

"I built that house," I whispered. "I know every wall. Every wire. Every shadow. He thinks he's the hunter. He’s about to find out he walked directly into my slaughterhouse."

Two minutes later, the armored SUV swerved into the long, dark driveway of my Great Falls estate. The SWAT vans pulled up behind us, turning off their sirens to maintain tactical stealth. Red lasers pointed toward the front doors.

"You have three minutes before my team breaches," Sterling warned me, handing me a concealed bulletproof vest and a tactical taser. "If you aren't out with those boys by then... we tear the place down."

I strapped the vest over my torn clothes, kissed Maya on the forehead, and looked into Elizabeth’s eyes. "Keep her safe."

"Go get your boys, Clara," Elizabeth nodded.

I slipped out of the vehicle, stepping silently into the pouring rain. I approached the side entrance of the mansion, pulled the small black remote from my pocket, and pressed the master lock-down code.

Every heavy iron security shutter across the doors and windows slammed shut simultaneously with a deafening THUD, sealing the entire house from the outside world.

The lights inside the mansion went completely dark.

I stepped through the hidden service entrance, stepping into the pitch-black hallway.

"Adrian," my voice echoed through the dark house, amplfied by the internal intercom system. "You wanted your wife? I'm home."

[HOOK FOR NEXT CHAP] A heavy shotgun blast tore through the drywall right beside my head. Adrian’s voice cackled from the dark hallway: "Welcome home, Clara... let's see who survives the night!"
