Chapter 4 - THE STOLEN DAUGHTER

The world stopped spinning. The room fell completely silent, except for the loud, erratic thumping of my own frantic heartbeat.
"W-what did you just say?" I gasped, my voice barely audible as I scrambled back up onto my hands and knees, staring at Elizabeth in sheer horror. "That's impossible... I remember the pregnancy! I felt them kick! I gave birth!"
Elizabeth knelt down beside me, wrapping a firm, supportive arm around my shoulders.
"You gave birth to a child, Clara," Elizabeth explained gently, tears glistening in her own eyes. "A single, healthy baby girl. Eight years ago at St. Jude’s. But you were put under heavy general anesthesia during an emergency C-section due to suddenly spiked blood pressure."
The memory hit me like a physical blow. I remembered the blinding lights of the operating room. I remembered the oxygen mask pressed against my face. I remembered Adrian standing over me, holding my hand, telling me to close my eyes and trust him.
"While you were unconscious," Elizabeth continued, opening a second section of the Manila folder filled with black-and-white hospital surveillance stills and altered birth certificates, "Adrian paid off the attending chief surgeon, Dr. Harold Finch. They recorded your baby girl as a stillborn. They told you she didn't survive the birth."
"No... no... nonono!" I sobbed, clutching my chest as if my heart were physically ripping apart. "I grieved that little girl for years! I held a empty funeral! I buried a tiny, sealed casket!"
"It was empty, Clara," Elizabeth whispered. "And while you were recovering in the ICU, grieving a child that wasn't dead, Adrian brought in twin newborn boys born six hours earlier to a surrogate mother he had secretly hired in Maryland. He swapped them. He gave you the twins to keep you occupied, to tie you down to a motherly role, and to make sure you never looked into the company finances."
The sheer, unimaginable monstrosity of it washed over me.
For eight years, I had raised Samuel and Owen. I had wiped their tears, nursed them through fevers, stayed up night after night holding them when they had nightmares. I loved those boys with every fiber of my soul. They were my sons.
And at the same time, my real, biological daughter was out there somewhere in the world, living a lie, stolen from my arms before I ever got to hold her.
"Where is she?" I demanded, my despair instantly scorching into a white-hot, blazing rage. I grabbed Elizabeth by her jacket collar, my eyes wild. "Where is my daughter, Elizabeth?! Where did he take her?!"
"I spent the last twenty-four hours tracking down Dr. Finch’s private off-shore bank records," Elizabeth said calmly, handing me a printout of an address. "Finch retired six years ago to a private, heavily guarded estate in Charlottesville. He didn't just help Adrian forge the records, Clara. Adrian gave the little girl to him. Finch and his wife have been raising her as their own daughter."
A loud gasp escaped my lips. "He gave my child to the doctor as payment?!"
"As a bribe to keep him quiet forever," Elizabeth corrected. "Her name is Maya. She’s eight years old. And Clara... Dr. Finch just placed his home on the market three hours ago. He booked three one-way tickets to Zurich, Switzerland. Their flight leaves tonight at midnight."
I stood up instantly, wiping the tears from my face. The helpless, broken woman who walked into that divorce courtroom was gone. In her place stood a mother whose child had been stolen—a woman capable of ungodly wrath.
"Call my head of security," I ordered, my voice dropping an octave into pure ice. "And call the Chief of Police in Charlottesville. Tell him Clara Lane is coming."
"Clara, wait!" Elizabeth warned, standing up quickly. "You can't just storm a private estate! Finch has armed private security! If you go in guns blazing without legal authorization, you’ll be arrested, and Finch will slip through the net!"
"I don't care about security," I snarled, grabbing my car keys from the counter. "And I don't care about legal authorization. I spent eight years letting men dictate my life, my money, and my family. Today, I take back my blood."
I walked out to the backyard first. Samuel and Owen were kicking the soccer ball into the net. I knelt down and hugged them both so tightly they giggled.
"Mommy has to go take care of a very important errand," I told them, kissing both of their cheeks. "Uncle Marcus and three security guards are going to stay here with you. I will be back before bedtime, okay? I love you both more than the universe."
"We love you too, Mommy!" Owen cheered, running back to the ball.
I got into my SUV, slammed the door, and jammed the engine start button. The engine roared to life.
As I tore down the driveway, my phone rang on the dashboard. It was an unknown caller ID from the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
I pressed the speaker button. "Speak."
"Clara," Adrian’s sinister voice rasped through the static line. He was calling from jail. "Did you like my little gift? Have you met Dr. Finch yet?"
"You are a monster, Adrian," I hissed, pushing the accelerator down to ninety miles per hour on the highway. "You took my baby."
"I took what was mine, and I gave away what was yours," Adrian laughed maniacally over the phone. "And you'll never get her back, Clara. By the time you reach Charlottesville, Finch and Maya will already be on a private jet. You lost, Clara. You’ll always lose to me."
"Listen to me very carefully, Adrian," I said, my tone deadly quiet. "You thought you locked me away in a golden cage for twelve years. But all you did was give me twelve years to study your every weakness. I own your company. I own your money. And before midnight tonight... I am taking my daughter back. And you? You will rot in a dark cell for the rest of your pathetic life."
I slammed the end-call button.

Two hours later, the towering black wrought-iron gates of Dr. Harold Finch’s private estate in Charlottesville loomed ahead through the heavy rain.
[HOOK FOR NEXT CHAP] I didn't stop to press the intercom. I pressed the accelerator flat to the floor and rammed my three-ton SUV straight through the front gates, smashing them off their hinges. But when I burst through the front doors of the mansion, I found Dr. Finch sitting in a puddle of blood on his living room floor—and Maya was gone.
