Chapter 4 - The Alibi CrumblesAt 6:00 AM, the house was dead silent. I stood at the kitchen island, drinking black coffee while reviewing the documents spread out before me. Bank records, property deeds, phone logs, and the surveillance footage of Vanessa's fake emergency.

Footsteps padded softly down the hardwood stairs. Julian appeared, fully dressed in a crisp button-down shirt and trousers, though his face looked as though he hadn't slept a wink. His usual arrogant poise was replaced by a desperate, cornered energy.

"Claire," he said, his voice low and urgent as he approached the island. "We need to talk. We need to handle this like adults. Don't do anything rash."

"Rash?" I took a slow sip of my coffee, looking up at him with mild amusement. "Julian, I spent five years playing the doting, blind little housewife because I thought our marriage mattered. You and your little mistress treated me like a bank machine and a live-in maid. That isn't rash. That's overdue housekeeping."

"Vanessa has nothing to do with this!" he hissed, slamming his palm onto the marble surface. "She was in a dark place after her divorce! I was just helping her get back on her feet!"

"By buying her a million-dollar condo with our marital assets?" I raised an eyebrow, sliding a printed property deed across the counter toward him. "Take a look at page four, Julian. Your signature is right there as the primary co-signer. Notarized three months ago."

Julian stared at the paper as if it were a venomous snake. The bravado completely evaporated, leaving behind a terrified, pathetic man clutching at straws.

"Please, Claire," he whispered, his voice cracking. "If the hospital board finds out about this—if this leaks—my career is over. I'm up for the Chief of Surgery appointment next month. All my research, my reputation... it'll all be gone."

"Your reputation," I repeated, my voice dropping to a dangerous chill. "What about my five years? What about the gaslighting? What about the nights I sat here waiting for you while you were playing domestic house with her?"

Before Julian could answer, a soft click echoed from the hallway archway.

We both turned. Vanessa stood there, wearing a silk robe that looked suspiciously like the one I had left in the master bathroom. Her hair was artfully disheveled, and her eyes wide with feigned innocence.

"Julian? Is everything okay? I heard shouting..." Vanessa stopped mid-sentence as she saw the papers spread across the island and the stone-cold expression on my face.

A flash of calculated malice crossed Vanessa's eyes—a split second where the mask slipped, revealing the ruthless opportunist beneath the tearful victim.

"Ah," Vanessa said, straightening her posture and letting out a cold, sharp laugh. "So the maid finally found out. Honestly, Julian, it’s about time. I was getting tired of hiding in guest rooms like a thief."
